An open discussion

Is it time for a number of moderators on the community blogs?

I'm not volunteering, but consider the following points:

1. Free speech is all well and good, but if people can't respect each other then something has to give.
2. ALL established forums/blogs are moderated. Without exception.
3. This website is free to use and Mr NWB cannot dedicate his entire life to it. Nor should he have to.
4. We have a clear set of guidelines which people blatently disregard.
5. The minority are currently ruining this site for the majority (in my opinion)
6. Trolls and WUMs (wind up merchants) are becoming more frequent.

Forum stalwarts are leaving and/or have left. Venues won't join for fear of being rounded on.

Let's keep this blog sensible, on topic and let's see if anyone has any ideas how we restore some normality to the blogs.

It's not just NWB that suffers. I read this on another site:

Dealing with Flame Wars and Internet Trolls
Flame Wars
A combination of varied personalities, along with the anonymity of the computer presence, will inevitably lead to online arguments between users. While it is great to encourage healthy debates, an outright "flame war" is a problem that spreads quickly. The easiest way to stop hurtful and personal attacks on discussion threads is to delete the thread or post in question.

Do not feed the troll
Someone who purposely joins an online community to cause problems and to irritate other users is often referred to as a "troll". The easiest way to get rid of a troll is to not feed him, i.e. do not encourage a trouble maker by responding. It is your heated response that fuels a troll - they want you to notice them. They want you to be irritated.

What to do
Don't give them the satisfaction. Instead, delete any troll-like comments they post and if other users are responding to the troll, suggest to those users (in private, if possible) that they should ignore them, as well. Soon, the troll will grow bored and move onto another site.

I'd be all for them as long as they have guidelines. You'll get "free speech" arguments. But this isn't A: America and B: a site owned by all. It's Mr NWBs property he should decide this.

Moderation kills free speech, but where speech is truly free there's always going to be someone to rub up others the wrong way. It's a catch 22, so I reckon leave it as is, and just use the site for your own entertainment/promotion/advertising/anything else you might want it for. If the stalwarts, or any other members for that matter, want to take the hump and leave it's up to them I suppose. But surely it'd make more sense to stick around and not let someone put them off using what is for the most part a very good site? People have had a pop at me and my band in the past, fair play to em. It's not going to stop me mucking in and having a laugh on the forums when I can. Just take it all with a big pinch of salt and get on with what really matters, what drew us all here in the first place, and the reason we spend our spare time gigging and rehearsing. The music!

From my side of the fence Asa, I've been on here about 18 months and not much has changed.

Trolls as they seem to be called, were there then. There was the Dalek when I first came on, then the guy with txt speak, who, if you checked his profile, appeared to genuinely be in a band!!! - I think he was just a bit simple (and before the pc brigade jump on me; I am not interested in attention disorders or the fuck else, when I was a kid, he was simple - you're welcome to your modern names).

A lot of the topics here go round in cycles and people maybe add a bit more each time, it seems, cos they've been on a while. Let's not forget there are a lot of new users who didn't discuss these issues when they were posted last year or the year before.

From what I've read looking back on old posts, not much has really changed. Let's face it, "everything was better in our day"!!! - that is always the case isn't it.

If it's old hat folks and you've been there, just ignore it. If it winds you up, then get involved.

let's all just chill a bit

i still think this site is great

if i see any shite posted by trolls etc i just stay away

i used to get involved cos i felt it spoiled the site. it does, but i just ignore it now, attention seeking drivel

some of the arguments and anger ive seen on here defies belief, all from discussions about music, music is amazing but not really such a serious matter considering some of the things that go on in this world

what draws my interest is when i see blogs about music. but im more im a quick skimmer of the blog titles nowadays

ive made some brill friends on here and i love seeing who is on, if i see some pals on, thats when i get more involved nowadays, hopefully that defines community in some way

peace out..

We certainly shouldn't be getting tetchy with newcomers who are opening up what may be perceived as old debates. If they haven't debated it yet who are we to "yawn" at them etc. It's hardly conducive to at atmosphere of inclusivity.

As a fairly new member I started a post on charity gigs etc which started as an interesting debate and ended up in schoolyard squabbling (in which I didn't take part). I genuinely believe in open, honest discussion and have learnt a lot from the discussions I've had with people on their posts and my own. If a moderator could do the job of stopping the personal point scoring and pedantic nit picking then that's fine but I don't see how you could do it without sitting on the forum all day and night.

Totally agree with the point made that it probably gets boring for the old school to see the same debates but new comers haven't had these conversations.

Guess self moderating (withthe final word coming from Mr NWB of course) is the best way forward. Don't feed the trolls and perhaps a symbol of warning passed privately would be a way of discreetly warning everyone of a troll post?

Whilst we're on the subject; if my charity gig post offended anyone then I apologise, the intention was supposed to be well meaning benchmarking

Arf a dinari for me bleedin life story?!!

come on chaps .... it's fucking computer generated thingy .... yes you CAN say what you want, and i'm sure most of the regular posters know who would say things face to face and who hides behind the type ..... but when all's said and done this blog stuff is exactly that ... typing!!

If anyone can take so much offence that they don't want to ever log on again then, no offence, but you're not going to last long on any internetty type thingy. NOTE: if you want to leave it cos you can't be arsed wading through the shite that's different

One mans Troll is another mans Freedom Fighter. LOL
I had the Troll thing thrown at me the other day. Water off a ducks back for me, I enjoyed the sport.... I had 10 Pm's agreeing with me and several emails enjoying and agreeing with my post... they enjoyed the sport too
Just because someone doesn't like what is being said , doesnt give them the right to put Darlek or Troll and don't feed the nigger ( which is highly offensive bye the way) picture on someones thread... What gives them the right to judge?
I didn't put an arse, a tit or a sick horse being shot under theirs ! This would , in my opinion stifle debate/kill the banter. I didn't delete their Images... as it turned out it helped my argument according to the peeps who spoke to me!
Debate is surely the way?
I may not like what you say, but our forefathers killed and died for the right for you to say it.... viva liberty!
If you don't like what is being said and the owner of the thread is is going to argue with you till the end of time , then just give up... you have said your piece, its on public record and you can sleep easy... remember both parties have the right to say their piece.... Once the point has been made move on.... All you are doing is making the thread go on and on.
The person who has started the thread, I feel, has the right to answer every criticism that is posted to them. You keep on posting after you have made your point just gives the person who started the thread more kudos and numbers of contributors next to their thread.
Its not carved in stone, just my thoughts ...................................

....we dont really need moderators do we??

The process is simple...

Use your eyes to read the blogs..... and use yer brain to digest the info.....then use the same brain to decide on a) to respond b) to ignore......

Presonally dont need a 3rd party getting embroiled within that process......

As for trolls / daleks / posters whom i do not agree with ...... I would much rather let them loose as depending upon my mood, my day at work and a huge number of other factors i sometimes wanna come on here for a rant / vent of my spleen / heated discussion etc etc etc....

I respect everyones right to have an opinion and to be able to post it ...... however everyone should therefore respect my right to tell them that their opinionionion is obviously "fucking wrong and they are therefore clearly a moron" and that they should agree with what i say instead... hahahahaha....

Do think we should employ Grammar police tho', smelling pisstakes should be punishable by death!

Y'see that's the thing with forums. Some of the people using them think that they have the right of free speech. You don't. This isn't Hyde Park Corner, effectively your members of a club.

You've become a member here and part of that membership is to abide by the owners rules. If that's not ok with you then I'm sure you'd be free to leave. Similarly when you break those rules you can't moan when the consequences of your actions bite you on the arse.

I run a forum for a motorbike Owners Club, we don't have moderators and doubt we ever will, to be fair I haven't seen or read any volatile posts. However, I was in another motorbike Club about 3 years ago who did have moderators and the like, that turned out really sour as there was a noticable clique within the Club.

Those within the clique would and say what the wanted but the rest had to either shut up & agree or bugger off, if you posted something against the grain you w ould be put down in flames. Then they wrote up this constitution for all to abide by...............Wankers.

Lets not go down that route folks, really not very pretty.

Simple but effective ways to "police" this site by it's members

1: Obvious Trolls.............Dont feed them. Ignore what they say. Don't reply to them. Send them to Coventry. (you get the idea)

2: People who's views are the direct opposite of your own ( ohhhh let say when it comes to what they will play for at a venue) Respect that and relaise that you may strongly disagree with what they say, they do have the right to say it.

3: Don't take anything personally. I have only meet two or three people from here and they are all great guys and gals who I am happy to call a friend. For those of you I haven't met yet I would imagine you would be the same as we all share a common interest and goals.

I must here and now apologise to Waiting as I did believe he was another Dalek and it would seem that I was wrong and he is far from being a troll. Sorry matey :-(

Best wishes and good luck for this weekend

We all have the right to free speech... ( the united nations says so,lol)
A forum, without going into a dictionary and actually looking it up is, I believe, a place to share ideas, opinions and information a debate.
I liken it to people having a sit round a table ( might be a pub with beers or a cafe with a mug of tea, mmmmmm tea, drooool) and having a chat. sometimes it's heated sometimes it's a love in!
China ,Iraq and Gaddafi's regime ( now thankfully crumbling, I wonder what will replace it?) if NWbands were based there, We'd all be locked up for being non conformist. We would be political prisoners, we would have food parcels the guards would take my chocolate and taught me through the bars, the evil devils.
Amnesty International would try to free the Nwband members, there would be placards and marches in London.and other free countries...David Dimbleby would host questions about us on telly.....
Is that what you want ?

I think it's all down to perception. I don't see a moderator as someone watching the blogs kicking people out and curbing free speech. I see a moderator as someone removing content which doesn't follow the guidelines as set by the owner of this site. There's a massive, massive difference.

It is a fine line. I like the concept of free speech. But with free speech comes responsibility. You have to be held accountable for what you say and you have to respect the views of others. If people cannot uphold these standard values (not even guidelines or rules) then there has to be someway of making sure that this site is a site that EVERYONE can enjoy. Sometimes you have to give up some of your own freedoms to the benefit of the wider community.

I'd like to live in a world where I can do what I want, when I want and where I want. That's personal freedom. But I don't. I live in a democracy where the needs of the wider community are more important than my own and the government and the police enforce the law. I can choose to leave and go and live elsewhere, but I quite like the benefits I get from being a part of this society. So I stay and I do my bit.

I'm ejoying the debate though.

i would go a bit further ..... to use the above analagy......a handful of us are sat in a pub and some anonymous bloke parks himself at the edge and starts saying "you are wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong ...... all of you" .... "you there fellah, i dont know you from adam, but the whole basis of how you live your life is wrong, any values you have are wrong..etc etc etc" you get the gist....... am i gonna sit there and sip my pint thoughfully??? or am i gonna think "who the fuck is this nutcase?" and start off with a polite "i do not concur with your aforementioned protestations, allow me to retort" ...... (Ok i dont really do polite victorian talk ...)

As a final word on the subject ....... i work more hours than is healthy for me (as those who know me will testify) during the week and this is my hobby, the main thing that keeps me from a nervous stress induced breakdown....... I will not accept anybody telling me that my pursuit of my hobby is impacting on their livelihood.... If it is impacting on your livelihood then its about time you looked closely at whether your livelihood is in fact a workable business model and stop blaming me and my ilk.....

But please no moderation .... the highs and lows, exchanges and sweary words, the cliques and outsiders are what make this interesting...

Oh I see what you mean..... Its not really about moderators .......I think its how we register to the site.
as in maybe a photo and a email available ... Most sites , the peeps who run them has to verify the new members....
I had some "carry on" with a vindictive cow who was the girlfriend of a x guitarist. This was on a site similar to this in the NE.
She set up accounts under several different names, and sought to (try) destroy my business my personal relationship and alienate my friends... A real nut job in fact.... I complained to the admin, I guessed who it was , I knew she had at least 2 accounts ,turns out she had several! because of the slanderous nature of the messages I was given her email address by the admin......
One thread later exposing her and and a email to her threatening printed out copies of all her statements to be sent to various peeps soon stopped it...... This was all crazy and went on for months ... very stressful at the time... The girl was an alcoholic probably bi polar or similar......... The x guitarist is still with her, as a result he can not get a gig anywhere, Shame he is really good guitarist... thats a story for another time.... probablys best round a table with a pint, lol than on here, he might try and do me for slander, lol

@waiting to join a band

"doesnt give them the right to put Darlek or Troll and don't feed the nigger ( which is highly offensive bye the way) picture on someones thread... What gives them the right to judge? "

Seems as this was referring to something I posted thought I may aswell just jump in and counter your ridiculous argument. The post you are referring to was as follows, in your words:

"Re ; thread Bands required.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please put your money where your mouth is! Which bands will play for £120 or less?

Sign below for the Cotty, their other pubs and all other pubs/venues who come on here ....

Have you the balls?"

Now I'm sorry but that post had no intention other than to antagonise people and cause further arguments, you can't even possibly argue that this post was not a "troll" post because it clearly was, there was no debate within it just you forcing your opinion on people. And as for your comment about 'don't feed the nigger' and getting on your high horse about that, it didn't actually say anything like that for a start...if you care to re-read it sometime you'll see it was a joke picture trying to ward people off posting and fuelling the pointless argument you started, not sure how you interpreted it as "highly offensive". You say "What gives them the right to judge?", when the post in question is probably the most judgemental post I've ever seen on here, it basically says "if you would play for £120 you're a cunt and I'm going to try and show you up".

It got heated yes , it was a debate yes , I put on a thread and answerd every comment .
Daleks and such forth just stifle the debate....
As I said earlier... I may totally disagree with what you say but I will fight for the right for you to say it.
I gave reasons why I thought it was wrong for a band to work for £120 on a Saturday night and went it to some depth as the thread stirred debate.
I took off ( as requested ) the names of bands who said they would work for £120 from a earlier thread.
I give reasons for everything I said and explained my whole thought process to the arguments... Many people disagreed with me , but I assure you Many did agree also . we cant all be right all of time , and I include myself in that remark... Would I take anything back?( well maybe I shouldn't have rose to the bait?) somethings that were a little cheeky? but hey I gave as good as I got, the fundamental arguments were in my opinion ( and many others) valid
I have gave my name on here on various threads and have met many form users in person and hope to meet more ... Im not anonymous . I will have a web site when my new projects are in place , which by the amount of feed back I am receiving will be sooner rather than later.
I welcome your reply above and have no malice with you or anyone else on this site.. Its banter and its why we are here. I promise I would hate to offend anyone, its sometimes just the nature of an agument .

ST still a Good Blog !! you’re opening statement included ~ “Venues won't join for fear of being rounded on.” I think, this and verbal abuse from some is the real issue.

Its not attractive to new comers. Unless they are just another loud mouth type person with no real commitment to discussing valid subjects that effect us all as musicians or as a venue.

What’s the difference between NWB forum or How to fix your car forum ???

NWB is an example of “Virtual-World” meets the “Real-World” – everything written with bad attitude, behaviour or abuse can be read by venues, which could affect you in real life. Just like being abusive to another member could mean you get your head kicked in – since members indirectly give away who they are via band-name, gig-guide, date, website, pictures etc. Unlike “how to fix your Car” forums you’d never give person info away or enough that would effect you in real life.

So… is it that, the members are not mature enough to realise that there is …or could be a real-world implication to there statements ?

Unlike other musician-forums NWB is unique in that it is local to the NorthWest and there is involvement from local NW venues. NWB has created a forum for free but doesn’t really get involved with the policing of subject matter or day to day running. (Which I fully understand time/effort/monies etc – so I’m not knocking NWB – thanks for providing this local forum) That said, the community needs to mature or NWB reputation becomes a joke to the outsiders or outside world (venues).

Here’s some food for thought ~

1) How come other musician forums (specifically muso wanted/available type) have many more posts per day within the same geographical coverage than NWB ?

2) I genuinely know of other muso/bands who wont even post their band on here, generally because they’re not Pub-band types …but also because they thinks it’s clique and have seen the abuse/mentality.

Ok, I could ad more but there is enough there for others to spell check and hurl abuse for one day.

Bob

P.S I started a blog reference “Are Agents worth their cut or could NWB be one”. It is still listed with over 50 comments (quite a few abusive comments aimed at me thou :-)) …but its not listed in “Hot Posts” – I’ve not deleted it, as I say its still listed and its date is the same as others which are listed in “Hot Posts”. Why’s that ? Any ideas ?

@ Waiting:

Not sure if you seen this from my earlier reply:

I must here and now apologise to Waiting as I did believe he was another Dalek and it would seem that I was wrong and he is far from being a troll. Sorry matey :-(

Best wishes to all on NWB.

@ Mr Nobody:

The "Hot posts" change every week. After a week they are deleted from the list.

Best wishes

John

The "hot posts" section only relates to posts within a certain time frame and automatically refreshes - I don't know what the time frame is specifically or whether it refreshes on a particular date in the month or more on a "rolling" basis but you will note in time that the list constantly evolves in order to focus on the most recent topics.

It's certainly nothing personal and not any form of censorship. The only form of what may be termed "censorship" regarding the content of the right hand side columns is in what posts are in the "pinned posts" section - which mr nwb decides.

@ wagontown terry ... hi there my name is mark and i too am a musaholic ..... the "you there fellah..." was in quotations and not specifically directed, just a generalisation and bastardization of a number of sweeping statements that have hit this site of late regarding selling souls down the river etc etc... if you read the post again (and it is crying out for a couple of comma's i grant you!) it should make a bit more sense.... if it doesn't ? i need to rethink the whole typing as i talk thing maybe...
