you can only pick one, a tough choice!

not a who is the greatest guitarist, who YOU like best and why

Brian May for me, no contest, the below video pretty much says it all for me

amazing melodic solos, sound, songwriter, damn nice bloke and held in hugely high regard by many guitar heros, even steve vai says brian may walks on another level

Yes Dan that Stevie Ray Live at El Mocambo is awesome. In 1994 I was in Toronto and found El Mocambo
in the middle of run down Chinatown. It's tiny, bet you cant get 50 people sat down, one cubicle bogs, I sat there
with a beer trying to imagine that night Stevie played. I'd be suprised if it was still there.
So Stevie for me plus Joe Bonamassa in recent times

tough one-so many. first thought was "clapton"-he was the standard by which most of the great guitarists set for themselves, in my opinion?-then-on reflection-in terms of the axeman who had me rocking out big time first time i heard him live - and for that i shall always be grateful-has to be alvin lee (tya).

Well it's obvious, it's Gar...erm, Sco...no, BB, no Alber, no Fredd, no Jeff Heal...Robert Cra...no, Steve V..Joe, no...Stanley Jordan is interesting, not enough feel maybe tho, Jeff Beck though...no....nobody's said Carlos...but then Nuno, no...a young Clapt..then not now...

OK if it has to be one for the 'desert island' it's Gary Moore. If you run through rock, metal, jazz, jazz fusion, blues, blues rock it's all in the catalogue...except Country, and surely that's a good thing!?.,..

sorry Willow (and Rob) - Randy rhoads guitar playing seemed to be thought out, constructed but yet fluent (if that makes any sense!!!). It never came across as one-upmanship (made up word!!???).

Revelation (Mother Earth) for me has everything a song needs musically (apart from the cheesy 1st verse lyric!!! lol)

Gary Moore's 'Hurricane' - from Back on the Streets, but live. Ian Paice drum solo's tasty too, as is Neil Murray's bass, and some interesting keyboard from Don Airey. This version's a bit indulgant but maybe adds to the jazz fusion feel???

BTW, I may just go with Jez on Randy Rhoads for the unfulfilled potential!

I'm never comfortable with the "unfulfilled potential" schtick. Yes, maybe Jimi and Randy could have gone on to be more incredible. They also had the equal opportunity to become a drunk keyboard player like my old hero EVH (thanks Hagar you ponce). There were tales that Randy was going to concentrate on classical guitar rather than staying with Ozzy. We just don't know.

Vai has gone into a world that has probably alienated some of the fans he had back in DLRs band. I know I have a hard time with him now. Yet he's fulfilled his potential.

Woulda, shoulda, coulda?

Best guitarist? Hmmmmmmm...... a dead one perhaps?

Or a quiet one if he insists on breathing.

Or maybe just one who gets his head out of his arse long enough to realise he's fuck all without the rest of the band.

# Posted by Bad Horsie (Mick) - 30/08/2011, 23:46 (GMT)

Hahahah. Nice try. ANY member of ANY band is the weak link if they think it's about them. It's ALL about the team.

What else do you have? ;o)

# Posted by The Cottonhouse Shakers - 30/08/2011, 23:51 (GMT)

Whilst I'm being controversial (or a pain in the arse) - Johnny Marr is a genius.....although I still say Django was the best.

Avatar

# Posted by Bad Horsie (Mick) - 30/08/2011, 23:56 (GMT)

That's an opinion, not a fact. He's definitely no slouch, but musical "genius" is in the ear of the listener, not the hands of the player. Django was in among a large list of "the best"s. And that's coming from a rock guitar player. ;o)

Yep. Steve Hackett is "my favourite". Seen him live with Genesis a few times and his solo tours and he has always given me the "hairs standing up" effect.

I've just been listening to his stuff as I was drawing up the next Conservatory Survey and it was a pleasure,

Rick.

@Mick - True, however there is technical genius and creative genius and Marr has a foot in both catagories but excells in the latter. The fact that he has inspired so many post 80's musicians is not in question. There comes a time when you have to acknowledge the quality even if there is no personal attraction....a bit like myself and Queen.

Hahahaha??? WTF? You sure your real name isn't Richard Cranium? Of course it's about the team.

But since when did Vai, Blackmore, Moore, Hendrix, boring twat, noisy fucking widdler, pretentious tosser, blah, blah, and so the list goes on, ever give a fuck about the team?

Since when did any "rock guitarist" give a fuck about any team for fuck's sake?!! That's the whole point of being a rock guitarist innit? That's why Spinal Tap showed you all for what you are!!

Hahaha Spinal Tappers All!! In fact I'll let you have that name for your next musical venture!

Probably piss a few people off here but I agree with (Bad Horsie) Mick. It depends on what rocks your boat . All the above are terrific players. It's good to have a debate, I know, but it's like saying Edwin Van der Sar was a better goalkeeper than Lionel Messi. Same game, different skill set. They all bring something different to the table, but who was the Meister? For me, Ry Cooder. Just for being so cool and quietly getting on with it for nearly 50 years.

For me it's Carl Verhayen ... Who ?

The guitarist who's played in Supertramp for the last 20 years, if you turn on your TV tonight you'll hear something played by him, guaranteed. The guy is simply a master of all styles and has more feeling in his little finger than anyone else has in their soul.

I've put a link to one of his tracks in the Dylan covers thread, but do yourselves a favour and check him out.

Close call as I'm a massive satch mark, but CV is the best I've ever heard.

Slightly different angle - for me the one single guitarist that can lift me up put me down and just help me unwind (with disgraceful ease) has to be Andy McKee.

Seen him live and it was immense, no electic twiddler has ever brought out so many emotions like he can.

Agree with Rick on this one.

Not the most technical or the fastest but Steve Hackett wins hands down for me every time. Met him in 1979 as a snotty nosed kid at his Liverpool Empire gig and after getting him to sign his "new" album (Spectral Mornings) I jokingly asked him how to play a certain song of his.....

He told me and then went into the Empire.... A few minutes later he came back out with his 12 string and SHOWED me how to play it....Class act

Best wishes

John
