Radiohead
Manic Street Preachers
Kean

To me they are all the same - MOR and a little whingy whiny.

But the main big acts that I don't get is QUEEN.....I appreciate what they do but there is something very offputting about them -

and David Bowie - IMO just one good track on every album exept for the one with The Laughing Gnome on! That album is very clever.

Give me the Goombay Dance Band before U2 any day. I KNOW U2 in theory are good, it's just not a theory I subscribe to. Unfortunately it's probably more to do with Bonio and Edgy being prize c@cks...Spent 25 years not listening to them as much as possible...

I really don't get Thin Lizzy. Played in a few bands where they've been complusory and despite having to learn songs i still don't see the fascination.

The other one is Simply Red. I just can't stand the way Hucknall looks!!

U2. They used to be a pretty good rock band. Now they're more cartoon than the gorillaz.

Also the latest crop of "super" groups (Chickenfoot, Crooked Vultures, Black Country Communion) bring nothing new to the table and really disappointed me. None of them are the sum of their parts.

Don't start me on R.E.M.

# Posted by Bad Horsie (Mick) - 30/08/2011, 21:54 (GMT)

I think I'd probably enjoy them if they brought something new to the table. It's all the same old riffs rehashed in the same old ways. I want to hear someone like those guys stretching themselves. It all sounds complacent.

Of course it doesn't help that I think Sammy Hagar is an utter weapon. lol.

I actually quite liked The Beautiful South. There's some fantastic lyrics. And lots of cheese.

And anyway, they were possibly the only band where the singer/songwriter shared the band's income equally between all members of the band and which disbanded for reasons of "musical similarities" which Heaton later explained to mean he'd realised they'd started churning out the same old stuff for the best part of a decade.

How many bands out there now would be so altruistic as to pack it in on the grounds that their music had become too samey?

So even if I hated the band I like their ideals.

U2 just because the band got stuck on stage in a giant lemon dicks!

emerson lake & palmer,NO! you dont attack keyboards with a knife ?

Didn't know that about the BS. Fair play to them. I recall a couple of years ago Heaton turning up for a TV interview on a pushbike and thought he was either making a point of something or was genuine. I've never thought Morrissey was genuine. He seemed like a pretentious arse and still does.

It made me chuckle when the documentary "the importance of being Morrissey" came out. Irony?

# Posted by Tubthumper - 30/08/2011, 23:35 (GMT)

Paul Heaton did a bike tour of British pubs in part to promote his solo album and also to no doubt be a bit preachy about the environment. However, he played at a number of pubs along the way (The Royale in Great Harwood being one of them) totally free of charge in return for the pub putting him up. I know quite a few folk who went to The Royale and who say he was a consummate entertainer and a real down to earth chap who just hung out all night with those in attendance.

Still, if you can't stand his music fair play! It's not a personality contest - maybe that should be the subject of another blog - who do you really like/respect as an artist but either don't particularly care for their music or used to love it but now find it somewhat lacking. In my experience a blog about "who do you hate but whose music you love" would be pretty redundant - if you can't abide the person you'd have to bloody magnanimous to then be able to rate their music!

I liked u2"s music ( i played bass in a band & we played a couple of ther tracks & i recentley bought the "boy " album box set ) up until bono maybe the band as well turned into self righteous gits eg: the zoo album & tour ,its really bad spinal tap , i like bands that make good music & grow old making good music & dont rest or think they can rest on their laurels ,ok 1 or 2 bad albums but c"mon u2 its 1,2,3,4.

Simply red i simply hate the music .

ELP i bought "brain salad surgery " as it had a great cover sleeve ..it had a great cover sleeve.

Level 42 i saw them live (some mates of mine had a spare ticket) & thats enough ,one of the most unexciting live bands ever & the place was full of yuppies well it was 1986 .

I liked U2 up to Rattle & Hum and then I too disliked the Zoo TV thing with the big tellys and stuff. They became a little bland after that. Those 3 albums - Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree and Rattle & Hum I used to know every track inside out and even though I haven't listened to them for years, I'm sure that I'd still like them.

The smiths - why does mike sweeney insist on playing them on rock radio,
When I was a spotty greebo growing up in the late 70s and early 80s they were exact opposite of what rock fans stood for.

The beatles - the biggest over rated band in history, and the first manufactured boy band. They were nobodys until a clever manager gave them stupid haircuts and suits that the youth could copy. Until epstein did that everyone just wore cardigans so no image.

U2 - just shit and bono is a knob

Ok my biggest hates are-

Human League
Depeche Mode
Blancmange
Howard Jones
Erasure
Comunards
Bros
Everything by Stock Aitkin & Watermelon
Mark Almond
Eurythmics

And anything else which comes under the umberella of 'camp rock' from the early to mid 80's.

Now THAT's why I'm a big fan of The Smiths, The Pogues, The Proclaimers and all NWOBHM from that period. It was basically anything alternative - including Talking Heads, The Blockheads, early U2, early Simple Minds, The Bhundu Boys - John Peel, Tommy Vance and Andy Kershaw.

Is this an age thing?
Or am I just woefully mainstream? half of this blog could be titled 'famous bands you really love' for me.

The Smiths - Morrisey is such a miserable bastard!

Guns and Roses - Overplayed, overhyped and the fact that Axl Rose is such a ferocious bell-end.

@touching cloth & @4most wanted - Yes unfortunately aids has devastated the whole African music scene. Not just aids but other deseases as well. Yes Rise Kagona played a few years ago with Champion Doug Vietch in a Afro Scottish collaboration. Because of The Bundhu Boys (who were brought to our attention by John Peel and Andy Kershaw) I grew a love of African music. Other great bands to have bitten the dust, due to disease, include Remmy Angala and The Four Brothers. The late great Miriam Makeba also passed away recently.

Not useless shit at all 4most wanted! Very important shit to me.

Watch out for my new project "Shantytown Junction" who play Zimbabwean and Central African dance music. We are supporting Orchstra DC Dansette (who play similar stuff) at Clitheroe Grand on September 16th. Tickets are just £6.

I`m with John and many others ;

The Beautiful South - I`d rather listen to silence thanks.
Oasis - cock
Guns n Roses - whiney voiced bollocks
The Smiths- ditto all previous comments
Most 60`s merseybeat style bands, gerry and the pacemakers etc.- toss
Blur - mockney cockney spew.
Anything Elton John has done since 1976. (he was ok before then.)
All john Lennon solo stuff.
All reggae stuff - sorry, don`t unnerstan` it.
Ska - same reason
hip hop - ????

Love to all
Chris
