looking to add more to my collection

i kinda like a little bit of prog, and have a little bit in my collection floyd, rush, dream theater etc

i feel me getting more into it as i get more advanced in years,i want to get full on into it some more, and although i have an idea and know many of what is most popular i would like to know peoples thoughts on their fave say 5 or 10 essential prog albums, and try before i buy!

heres some i know and like(and own)

Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon/The Wall
Dream Theater Scenes From a Memory/Images and words/Awake
Rush Moving Pictures
Queensryche Operation Mindcrime
Muse Origin Of Symmetry/Absolution
Queen A Night At The Opera
Styx The Grand Illusion
King Crimson In the Court of The Crimson King
Marillion Misplaced Childhood

as you may imagine anything with tasty guitar and some impressive musicianship will float my boat, but not too much geekery and daft lyrics please

come on,suggest to me? ears open and ready!

Rob

What "is" a prog album? I hear the term bandied about and see the label attached to certain bands. Have any bands not previously labelled "prog" released what was considered to be a prog album (and for once I'm not being pedantic or facetious, it's a genuine enquiry).

Right, read all that, and no. I'm proud to be British though. And it turns out I do own several prog rock albums and never knew it.

Edited - Aqualung by Jethro Tull if only for the immortal lyrics "sitting on a park bench.....snot dripping down his nose...."

Just to twist the genre a little this band are without doubt my favourite, probably of all time, and are still going strong (still have their own hair, teeth, etc) .... Muse... Origin Of Symmetry album ... set the tone for the new Progressives.

I know they're not Yes (brought up on them - still brilliant) but they are the best live act I've seen for a very long time.

There's a good question ... best live act you've ever seen?

Shep ;-)

Love Close To The Edge, check out 'The Yes Album' and 'Going For The One' by Yes.
Selling England By The Pound - Genesis , Also post Gabriel 'Trick Of The Tail' and 'Wind and Wuthering' are good as is Gabriel's first solo album.
Tull - agree on 'Aqualung' and 'Thick As A Brick' - also 'Songs From The Wood' and 'Broadsword and the Beast'.
As for Hillage - check out some Gong too, 'You' is great ( bit jazz prog!) as is their earlier stuff like Camembert Electrique'
Colisseum II may be up your street if you like your prog a bit jazzy too.
Greenslade are good too.

If you like Muse then check out a great newish Bolton band called Drama , some really great material from them, get links here:

Hi Rob, I have quite a large collection of prog, pretty much everything from that era worth collecting (bearing in mind that I consider prog to be more the 70s era than modern day prog),

Yes close to the edge was a an absolute classic,
all of the above suggestions are good
funny enough the sampler albums of the time had some brilliant classic prog stuff on them with all different bands on them there has to be something you like, heres a few titles to look out for :-

Journey to the edge which contains Tull, Camel, Curved air, Van der graff generator, Family, Iron butterfly etc

Still dizzy after all these years :- Black Sabbath, Colosseum, Affinity, May Blitz, Beggars opera etc

good stuff to listen to :- early Genesis, Pendragon, Marillion with and more so without Fish, early Floyd but there is some strange stuff amongst it, Budgie, Gracious, Gravy train are just a few worth a listen,

some might disagree with me here but the best Deep Purple album to have a listen to is Deep Purple in rock,

I have been to see most of these bands, brilliant stuff.

I'm with Shaun on this one;

Porcupine Tree; In absentia/Fear of a blank planet/The Incident

I got into them through Gavin Harrison's drumming, but all the musicianship is top notch, and the lyrical content is good too.

Hi Matey.

May I humbly suggest some choices not so far suggested?

Milliontown by Frost* (My choice for best debut CD ever and if you only take on board ONE of my recommendations then please let it be this one)

Spectral Mornings by Steve Hackett. (Ex Genesis guitarist and one of the finest albums ever made IMHO)

Smallcreeps Day by Mike Rutherford

The Seventh House by IQ (Dark Matter and Frequency are tasty as well)

The album that "got me into" the Genre was Tubular Bells but get the 2003 re-done version

If you want the best of "proggy Genesis" live then you MUST buy Seconds Out...The greatest live album ever again IMHO.

Good listening

Best wishes

John

Would Red Noise by Bill Nelson's Sound on Sound count? I know he's classed as "Experimental Rock" but isn't that a sub-division of prog? It's an amazing album, pushing the boundaries of the pop song structure whilst at the same time being brilliantly enjoyable.
