What is your favourite vocal perfomance?

we had everything else

Just having a think earlier and realised I have not heard a vocal performance for quite some time that has really moved me. Maybe I've missed something but most artists are more concerned with image these days rather than actual quality of voice. Even some of the so called modern greats don't really do anything for me (Duffy, Adele etc) and don't even get me started on the nu metal and indie stuff. Where are the Coverdales, Dio's, Freddy's, Rodgers' these days???
So......what is you're favourite vocal, not song but the vocal performance

Freddy mercury , who wants to live forever. Great range and make the hairs on my neck stand up every time I hear it.

Hi mate, have a listen to Centre Of The Universe by Kamelot. The vocalist is called Khan and he is superb.

Cheers,

Dave.

This, for me, is probably the best vocal performance of the 21st century...possibly ever....although I agree Freddie Mercury is a good call...two versions 30 years apart...breath taking!

rainbow had their fair share of excellent vocalists. my faves are

Ronnie Dio on Tarot Woman and Graham Bonnet on Eyes of The World. Bonnets vocal on only one woman with the marbles is pretty good too, Both great singers with muscular voices!!!

Been trying to nail it down - problem is different hour different person/band. Anyway just to be dull this hour was a toss up between a number of Aretha Franklin or Dusty Springfield songs (you did ask), Grace Slick doing White Rabbit but then I remembered this...

"Hi mate, have a listen to Centre Of The Universe by Kamelot. The vocalist is called Khan and he is superb. "

I just had a look/listen on youtube and found this

"In 2010, Kamelot was forced to cancel their North American tour across Canada, and the United States of America. It was announced that Roy had fallen ill, and could not perform. It is believed that Roy suffers from anxiety and depression, which led to his illness. Since the announcement was made, Roy has not returned to performing with Kamelot.
In 2011, Kamelot guitarist, Thomas Youngblood, announced in an interview that a religious aspect has been involved with Roy not performing with Kamelot.[3]
On April 22, 2011, Kamelot released a statement saying Khan had elected to leave the band.[4] In the media release, Youngblood wrote that Khan had been given a lot of time to make the decision and the band respected it. Roy himself announced his departure from the band in his blog April 21, 2011"

Steve Perry with Journey on Why Can't This Night...... Go on Forever

Or Luciano Pavarotti - Nessun Dorma

Both have the "goosebump" effect.

much too dificult to name just one "stand alone" performance-so many awesome pieces out there-this has to be "up there" with them, though. in my opinion-awesome!!

I've changed my mind. Thanks to all the trawling this thread has had me undertaking I recalled this (admittedly because it was used in an advert for baked beans - food of the Gods) which I did buy! The fact that I feel so profoundly moved every time I hear it and don't understand a word of it speaks volumes for the emotive power of the vocal performance. It makes me want to paint my naked body in tribal colours and go and hunt for my tea.
