A fantastic band ,what a shame ,but the last 3 or 4 albums haven"t been up to scratch ,maybe they"e just had enough ,ive followed R.E.M right from the beginning & i played bass in a band in the early 80s & we covered "what if we give it away " from the 1983 album "lifes rich pageant" andy@the stories

not really sad is it, it's just a band splitting up, that as said, haven't done anything special for a long time, There's only so many times you can advertise "...return to form, best album since AFTP" when it clearly isn't

TBH these were an example of a band who got a big recording deal and then went mainstream for me. Pretty much everything upto and including Green was good, then they became bland and poppy ('Shiny' Happy People'?).

I'm not sure they were a big influence on Nirvavna, but Stipe and Curbain were good friends and Stipe is actually God father to 'Kurtneys' child.

The two bands were different factions of the Seattle sound of which Nirvana became 'grunge' and REM stayed more experimental.

For those of you with 'Automatic for the People' and 'Monster' etc I would very much urge you to have a listen to earlier albums like 'Document' and 'Life's Rich Pageant' - this was the sound that launched R.E.M. and built them a strong fan base, before the record company started watering them down, by insisting on singles.

Only my opinion.
