Music you "Should" know

Sparked by the other thread.........

So, there are standards that everyone seems to learn (genre not withstanding) or thinks are important to a bands repertoire.

I've had a dabble with a LOT of songs in the past, but one thing I have never and will never do is play or learn a Rolling Stones song. A lot of people are amazed by this.

What material "should" you know that you don't?

I mean specific songs or artists.

This WILL go off topic, I know.... ;o)

I'll try and stay on topic..........

With you on the stones, think I bashed out Jumpin jack flash once and then that was me done.

One band that I just wont learn any songs from is Led Zeppelin - never been a fan and have no desire to soak up precious memory space in my head with their material (oooh controversial).

I suppose it goes without saying that I point blank refuse upon pain of detah to learn anything by Oasis either - and that is beacuse they are shite and quite frankly I don't like them.

As a closer I also will not learn Alright now by Free, I just can't bring myself to do it........

Good topic.
I burned out a turntable when I was younger learning all the classic rock of my time. To be honest in a lot of cases it ruined the track for me as I couldn't just enjoy the song without thinking of the progressions and the positioning through the solo parts.

So I took the decision that certain tracks are "Sacred" and I've never learned them. Hotel California & the end of Bohemian Rhapsody spring to mind.

Never got Hendrix or Clapton, although i can remember years ago spending hours on the bassline of Hey Joe just to appease the lead Guitarist .We play Honky Tonk Women, but its more like the Hank Williams original than the Stones,so its more like a bluegrass version, not that weve any choice ,lol...T

Got asked to play "A little help from my friends" last night at a jam night - Never, ever played that before.

Then had to busk "It's all over now" by the aforementioned Stones. But I suppose, by agreeing to do the jam night, I was agreeing to play whatever they threw at me.

But never really learnt any Beatles, Stones, or any of the general 60's songs. Way before my time!!

I share your disdain for the Stones....the only track of their's I would deign to play is Gimme Shelter.

I loathe playing Alright Now (it was the first song I taught myself to play about 20 years ago and once I had I thought "that's it i'm a drummer" and continued to play pretty much that song for an eternity) and Cant Get Enough. Though I have to say I do love both Free and Bad Company, I just think they have much better songs that are criminally overlooked. I've never been asked to play Wishing Well but I wouldn't as I know I would hate that too!

@Waggontown
I may be wrong but I think Hank Williams jr brought out his version of Honky Tonk Women in `87 - 18 years after the Stones original.....

I`ll get me anorak..............

back on point

i'm embarrassed not to know hardly anything that's considered classic .... i only ever remember bits of stuff ... even after playin 'em for a few years, as soon as I stop playin 'em i tend to forget 'em ... lyrically especially
