Best drummer of all time. Ever.

It's a tricky question; a hotly debated topic. Surely everyone here has an opinion?

I don't think I could pick a winner but my top 3 would be Bonham for the groove, Moon for flamboyance and Portnoy for sheer technical ability.

The floor is open...........

SIMPLE!!!! Buddy Rich by a clear mile, technical ability, speed, touch,if god is a drummer, Buddy Rich is his name.
Saw him with his big band at the davenport theatre in stockport when I was fifteen, still blown away to this day, I have never or ever will see drumming like that ever again, dont get me wrong there are some fantastic drummers out there, saw dave weckl at the willows in november last year, amazing drummer but for me Buddy Rich is the greatest ever. I even have his autograph on my ticket stub, how cool is that!!!!! Jay.

i can prob narrow it down to about 5 or 6 i really think are cool, but im sure theres loads more i could think of

Brian Downey(Thin Lizzy) for that great solid hard rock groove,Ian Paice(Deep Purple) for the great sound and style and Mike Portnoy(Dream Theater) or Joey Jordison(Slipknot)for amazing technical ability and for sheer underation Alex Van Halen(just listen to some of his work on the album 1984), Tommy Lee (Motley Crue for all round talent, groove and x factor)

yes i like mainly rock music :-)

Well tricky. But for me it has to be Steve gadd. His simplicity is amazing ! This guy reads a song writer's mind so well.He complements any song and allows the MELODY to come through without distraction. Some times you don't even know he's there !

I don't really know who the best drummer in the world could be, but my favourite is BUN E CARLOS of Cheap Trick. He plays everything with a brilliant economy and he never, ever over-plays.

Hi guys - just found this site and it's bloody, brilliant (apart from the fact that you're alla bit mental!). My chosen skin god would be Jeff Campitelli who plays behind Joe Satriani a lot. He's not as technical as Peart, or as hard edged as Portnoy, but he definitaly feels the flow of the music and is a bit more organic and user friendly. Having said all that, he still pisses me off 'cos I can't play drums like taht! LOL

got to agree re Buddy Rich...some of the stuff on Youtube (those duels) are amazing.
Must admit though if Keith Moon was reborn and came along and asked us if he could join Night train tomorrow, our present drummer would be on his way :)..s'ok, he can't read this, he's on holiday in Thailand.

PS Nobody mentioned Phil Collins yet LOL

Reni? Behave yourself!! Straight from the horses mouth though....the Stone Roses will NOT be reforming this year. There was an option for one gig and it was turned down. Gutted like.

Animal FTW!!

I don't have a favourite '1' drummer.

Feel and groove: Bernard Purdie (early Steely Dan),
Technicality: Terry Bozzio on Zappa / Beck LP's.
Simplicity: Phil Rudd.
Underrated: ZZ top's Frank Beard ... only on proper 'ZZ' Blues / shuffle recordings not the 'pop' tosh..

I do believe I opened with Bonham!

Fratellis? Meh! As for Helders, he is quality considering he only picked up the sticks a year before they made it. Yer man from Bloc Party is pretty good too.

haha oh yeah dint notice you opened with bonham!!! soz!! not a big fan of the bloc party guy, its all a bit too techy for me, i like a good tune!!! seriously if you like bonhams style of drumming you gotta ckeck out the frats!! not so much the groove but the way that the drummer follows every little turn and change in the songs is fookin amazing. not everybodies taste but definately one of the most overlooked bands in the last 5 years or so.

Not so much a vote for best, but a favourite.

Rob Heaton R.I.P.

Not just a drummer, but a songwriter as well. The clip is one of his, and he's playing the guitar on the intro, so no slouch there either:

Dave Grohl and Jimmy Chamberlin are others that may make a shortlist.
