what makes a gig night for you

apart from

coming back from one and having an argument with someone you dont know on NWB at 3am ? pmsl

for me its gotta be when people approach you at the end and tell you how much they enjoyed it, when you get used to playing venues you get to know some of the people that make it down there week in week out and you can always rely on their support and its always brill to see them again, very humbling

but when its really specific like i loved your playing on ********, not in an ego stroking way, but if youve worked hard on it and its a band you really love, its a wonderful feeling when someone says something like that and really humbling when someone spots and likes the effort youve put in

there was a few at the nags head the other week, one in particular near the front who was a massive lizzy fan singing nearly every word, you kinda lock in with them and acknowledge how much theyre into it when youre playing, you know what i mean? love that :0)

It's great geting re-bookings on the night from a venue that you haven't played before, kinda tells you that you have done your bit for the Landlord/Lady,

Rick.

I love it when people come up and ask me if I will give them lessons. It's happened quite a bit lately - and usually people of a certain age (ie not youngsters!) and often women too. It's great to think that anyone may have been so taken with what they've seen that it inspires them to want to take the instrument up themselves.

But the arguing at 3am on here wins hands down every time for me.

i agree there rob, when people (especially the stone cold sober ones) come up to you saying how much they enjoyed the show is lovely.

or maybe when someone comes up to you asking what equipment you use becuase they loved the tone/sound??

i was doing a gig up in morecombe a few weeks ago, was a fairly quiet night but those who were in enjoyed it, which made the long journey worth while, but the biggest shock was as i was walking off the stage dripping at the end of the night, a gent came over, handed me something and said how much he enjoyed the night and he'd like to buy me a drink, and as i looked down to see what he'd handed me, i found it was a £20 note, before i could say how grateful i was but could not accept £20 off him, he had gone out the door and disappeared.

i guess some people are too nice for their own good! but i have love for anyone who supports live music :)

I love it when people get up and dance rather than just sit/stand there.

When there's a real sense of comerarderie (however you spell that) in the room and we're all on the same level having a right old laugh together, when there's no barrier between band and audience.

And when we stay for about an hour after we've packed up because we're having such a good time and there's so many people to chat to and have fun with.

That to me makes the difference between a good gig and a great gig.

Oh yeah, and when we get booked back the same night rather than having to ring up - I love that!

Got to agree, as much as it is great to see a crowd bouncing, clapping, cheering, throwing underwear(obviousely this happens every week) you can't beat the chat afterwards, especially with the muso's in the audience who spotted that little bit of extra work you put into***** and the appreciation of the songs that nobody else does that you dug out from somewhere in the hope that everyone feels the same as you about that song.
That and the free beer anyway.

I hear ya.
For me, it`s all stress relief. I quite often arrive at the gig wound up to 99 and then spend 2+hours blowing it out of my system. To then see people letting themselves go too, and approaching me afterwards to tell me what a great time they`ve had is the entire justification of doing it. Sometimes you can be accosted by the most unlikely looking geezer who you`d think would despise it, to be told you are the best thing since sliced bread. Kinda nice.
Don`t get me wrong, it aint always like that.
Last week someone asked me how old I was. when I told them they rolled their eyes and said " fuckin ell , you`ve ad a `ard life !" ..charming.

An audience that can breathe unaided and whose "dancing" isn't the result of one of more medical conditions...

Whereas I like the audience reaction and can feed from it, the main buzz for me is when the band are tight as we can be. That's where the real buzz as a player is for me. I guess it comes from the regimentation I experienced in the 2nd section brass band I played in when younger.

The best bit is the feeling of warm sweaty notes in my pocket. Everything else is just window dressing....

What makes a gig night for me?

Well, the banter with the boys, the banter with the punters, the playing, the people singing along and dancing, the after gig banter, but most of all -

the delicious cold beer in the peace and quiet of my living room afterwards, with some inane drivel on the telly and that absolute relaxed feeling you only get after a gig.

INNIT!!

1. Being complemented on an original track when the listener is not aware that is is one of your own.

2. A full dance floor.

3. When spontaneus improvising comes together and magic is created on stage, nothing else matters at that point - not the audience, not the landlord....nothing.

All the things above, just get such a buzz from being able to play live music that people enjoy and get good feedback at the end of the night. Makes it all worthwhile for me.

Not having to pick you up any longer is a highlight haha.

It's simple really - when you, the audience and the landlord/lady are all smiles saying how great a night it was...priceless
