Can it sometimes be a let down after too much build up?
First of all I would I just want to say that this is NOT a review of Roj's birthday bash (Ricardo's set that ball rolling), although I would just quickly like to say "great to see you all and I had a blast".
Those of you who know me at all will know that I don't often go to see 'classic' rock covers bands much anymore - although I still love the music, my tastes have diverged quite dramatically over the past few years, so I now tend to go to see slightly different bands nowadays. Plus I just don't have enough spare time to see everyone. The notable exceptions to this trend are now female fronted rock bands (5th Element and Gypsy turned me onto them) and Phoenix, who set the bar for 'classic' rock for me.
Having tried to catch up with Catdog for the best part of 2 years and having been told endlessly how good they were, I actually approached last nights gig with some trepidation.
I was lucky enough to be early and got to meet all the guys before they went on (including a drum nerd session with John, Greg TLD and that beautiful drumkit), and once again I was impressed by the complete lack of ego and genuine friendliness of the musicians out there. Is being a wanker part of getting to 'make it'? All us part timers (and I'll chance including myself in this statement!) seem to be really down to earth.
So, was I disappointed? In a word:
NO!!
Chris the singist also plays occasional rhythm guitar to a very high standard. Talking to him before the gig he came across as just a genuine bloke (and not at all what I expected PMSL), but then he sings and OMG THAT VOICE!
Ian the full time and lead guitarist had the patience to explain to a couple of drummers that his two guitars don't 'just look good' (even though most of it went over my head!) and he was right, because
in his hands they sing.
Steve the bassman is one of the best I have seen (his style reminded me very much of Paul the bass player from Bad Horsie) using all five strings effortlessly.
And John 'Steven Merchant' on drums. I am actually lost for words. Although I still think he looks more like a young Ade Edmundson ala the early Bottom days. I did see just a trickle of sweat during the third encore, but it WAS bloody hot in there. I now have a new drumming hero (sorry Jeff Campitelli and Wick!).
I think they pretty much covered 4 decades from the 70's thru 80's hair rock (ha ha ha Chris!) to the present day with really upto date stuff like 'Starlight' by Slash and Muse.
I can't really think of much more to say without gushing except I now have two favourite 'classic' rock bands (which is probably just as well.....)
Nice to finally meetcha Chris - I'll try not to leave it so long next time....
Love to all
