taking dots on jam nights
This follows on from an earlier blog about drummers reading music.
For a while I have been contemplating going to a couple of jam nights to do a couple of uncommon songs (on guitar) with non standard arrangements (ie not 12 bar or similar). I accept that it may not be in the spirit of a "jam night" which by definition appears to be getting up and joining in with something that the residents know. However I want to try these songs out for myself. Don't ask me what they are, I haven't settled on them yet. Until I decide which ones and where I propose to go and inflict them on the audience there's no point.
Now, and no slight is intended, I think that not a percentage of NWBers may not read dots and I can't understand tab myself, so I was proposing to write out a chord sheet for bass and guitar, which will be sufficient, and not bother with drum dots because the drummers will have no trouble following if I count them in. No point in bass dots because again it's not crucial for the songs that a specific bass line is required.
The point of all this is, do y'all think it is it acceptable, is it fair and is it realistic and not insulting? I wouldn't want them folded up and forcibly inserted in my rear orifice! Obviously if the residents don't know the songs and the keys I (may) sing them in, they can't be expected to know the arrangements; and of course it will be jamming in a sense won't it?
Honest opinions will be welcome.
