Cost vs value

I often say that people know the cost of everything and the value of nothing. Take for example, photos and videos.

Whats the difference between cost and value?

The cost to the band varies depending on who you speak to. Some amateurs (and I include myself) building up a portfolio will work for free; some will charge expenses and some may even be lucky enough to get paid for their efforts. Professionals charge anything upwards of £100 for a photo shoot and £200 for videos. So the average cost to the band is let's say £100+

The value in this example is the revenue derived from bookings that you may not have otherwise been offered if your wonderful band had not been able to demonstrate your awesomeness through photos, videos and fantastic quality MP3s. It's difficult to say how much additional business your new photos and videos will bring in. At the very worst....nothing. But if they bring in just one additional booking, if they get you that foot in the door, that nose ahead of the competition at an industry average of £200 per gig, then the value is £200 and you've already made your money back.

It almost sounds like a risk worth taking doesn't it?

So why not drop me a message for a chat about your requirements, a no obligation quote or even some free advice.

Thanks
Asa

Don't know of any venues that have booked us off our vids, not really asked them, but I would guess it's a fair few.
As for punters who have turned up at our gigs and have watched our vids on here , not seeing us before, I can think of three gigs on the bounce recently were this was the case.
Ours are by no means professional vids, and it's worked for us, so having them done properly can only be a winner.

We're playing at a venue in a couple of weeks that has it's own film studio built in as well as state of the art in-house sound system, I enquired how much it would cost for them to film us whilst we played for their annual xmas event.

They use 3 HD cameras, 2 are fixed and one is mobile, all back-line is mic'd up etc, this was there response.

"Hi Lee,

Thank you for your enquiry about our AV recordings. Andy's quote was almost spot on, just omitted the cost of purchasing the audio*.

Video of show: £300
*Audio in multi-track: £150
5-hour audio mixdown: £145
Audio / video syncing: £ 60
______
Total : £655
+ VAT= £776

A more budget option might be just to go for the video at £300 (net of VAT), which includes guide stereo audio only. The above prices involve a professional audio upgrade on the stereo mix from the PA desk.

You could also purchase the separate audio in multi-track for £100 (net of VAT), and take it away to be mixed yourself, but as mentioned earlier, we do offer a mixdown service here too."

We may go for this if we get a repeat booking and if well paid gigs have been kind to us next year as I think a high quality video is paramount in gaining certain work. I have in the past pushed the band in the direction of cruise ship work and a high quality show reel is a must for these jobs, something you don't get when filming with your average consumer HD camera.

Absolutely. The Vibe told me they got 3 bookings immediately, and specifically, off the back of the song videos I posted for them a couple of weeks ago. So they've probably had about 900% return on their outlay.

Venues quite rightly don't want to take chances with the unknown. A live video can often allay any fears they may have about what it is they are being asked to book. Although I often shudder at some of the videos bands have on their myspace etc as there is such a thing as bad publicity in that regard......
