anyone use an mpv for gigging and moving PA etc?

Happy New Year folks

I'm thinking of getting a used MPV and trading in my car and van as we dont really need the 2 vehicles.

Does anyone use an mpv for lugging PA equipment or drums about and has anyone any recommendations as what are the ones i should be looking at?

Cheers
Nige

The only problem is its quite a high back step on some of them, and you may have to keep removing seats (like on a Galaxy or similar) my mondeo estate fits 2 mackies, Flight cased mixing desk, large tool box with cables,4 x 12 cab and head, mic box, stand bag, rack guitar stand and up to 4 guitars.

Think the Zafiras back step is lower and I think the back seats fold flat into the floor

I have used a Picasso and by folding the back seats down easily transported PA, 100w Marshall combo and two guitars. If you take the seats out it's like a small van

I toyed (or should it be toyoted?) with the idea a few years ago, but on the ones I looked at, the back 'step' was way off the ground, so loading would have been a real pain...so remember that when looking

I use a Toyota Verso and it does the Job well. Rear Seats fold flat and can be moved for and aft.

I use a 2.0 Zafira - the 2 back rows of seats fold completely flat just leaving the front seats, the rear is then effectively like a small van - I load 4 p.a. speakers, a powered monitor, keyboard amp, guitar amp, keyboard, guitar, mixer and 4 flight cases plus mic. stands etc. never had a problem (touch wood!)

Big Mart (of various bands) uses an old model Toyota Lucida and is absolutely smitten with it. He has named it "The Love Bus". It's bomb proof - he even drove it into the sea up to above headlight level (the sea was on the road on Morecambe front at the time and he hadn't noticed!) and it still kept on trucking (though they had to open the windows to let out a few exhaust fumes.....). It was cheap as owt, runs on diesel and he's convinced he's the envy of the road. Sad really.

Had a trailer, never again.....Too much hassle.

Fancy a Zafira from what I have seen as i like the fact everything folds down flat and there's no sill to lift over just slide flight case and speakers right in like a van

I use a Vauxhall Mariva. Like the Zafira seats fold flat but as it's based on a Corsa floor pan is a little bit smaller than the Zafiras' Astra floor pan. Still fits all my gear in whether it's the disco gear (lights, stands, Mackie speakers and cable bags and boxes) or the karaoke stuff (as above but with monitors and racked gear) or my bass rig. Great on juice as it's a 1.4 but with plenty of poke and a well decent runabout with all the seats up.

The guitarist and I travel in his Kia Sedona. Never would have looked at a kia myself before but it really is quite nice inside. Very comfortable with armrests and cup holders. Just what you need after screaming for nearly two hours.

We take full pa including two big full range cabs, and both our guitar set ups. Drummer and bass player travel separately. We can get three people in and probably four if we tried. The back is ok if you carry gear onto it. Big stuff lifted from floor is trickier but it's not too bad.

You couldn't get a big rock band with cabs and the like but a full small band yeah. Probably get a full trio in with the peeps too.

Seats come out easily. His is lpg so it's efficient.

I have a Zafira... very versatile.... 2L tdi.... and it really hardly notices the extra weight

I have a Sedona. It's got 4 luxury seats with armrests, folding tables, drinks holders. and enough room in the back for a full kit and monitors. If you took the second row of seats out you could get all the equipment in for a four piece band but not all the bodies.

It's got a 2.9 litre diesel engine and goes like stink on the motorway if you want it to. I take it steady and am quite impressed with fuel economy.

There's bloody hundreds of them on the road and they last forever with a regular service.....CJ

I'm watching this with interest - contemplating a vehicle change or a trailer instead of hiring when i need but it has to be big enough for a large PA set up - desk flight case, tops, subs, FOH rack, amp rack, cable and mic trunk, mic stand bags etc - plus space for 3 people (stagehand, partner and myself). Yet, if it's a vehicle i still have to be able to use it for my day business - anyone carry a full PA rig and bits plus 3 people in their MPV?..yeah i know, it's a tough call - half tempted for a crewbus!

Howard sounds to me you are looking more at a splitter than an mpv with all that lot.

Ive looked a them and the ones all the tour companies seem to go for are the mercedes VITO as you can get them in a regular length of extra long so the crew compartment ramains the same but the van element can be small or large, theres always a few examples on Ebay

The only thing that worries me with trailers is you see them on the road taking a right bouncing around, cant do any electrical components any good, I certainly wouldnt put a valve amp in one, spose ok for non active cabs and cable boxes etc?

Mitsubishi L300 DELICA, transports PA, drums, guitars etc + 3 humanoids, old school selectable 4WD when required so we'll never get stuck due to poor road conditions, very reliable and still get 30mpg and able to run it on veg oil to reduce costs further, and it costs the same to tax as the wife's Nissan Tino Almera !
Cost me £1200 quid 4 years ago and apart from routine maintenance has never let me down (touch head) :O)
