You're Not the bloke from the Cotty Brook are you? your grammer is a little similar, sorry mate , but £40 for a trio/band?
Just my two penn'orth.

Sorry to sound rude or abrasive but when a message like this comes on it usually starts a massive debate amongst the guys on here, some people have just started speaking to since the last time, lol.

Without being rude, you say you are new to the scene.

Bearing that in mind I fully understand that in experimenting with live music you want to keep your spending to a minimum in case it doesn't work.

However the stumbling block is this - for you to get artists that "know what they're doing" and aren't "crackpots" then you have to give these artists a reason to come to your place rather than go to their regular and established venues where they can get somewhere between £150-250.00 for playing at a tried and tested venue, to a crowd that they've learned what works to give a great night

Now where's the incentive to do that at the Flying Dutchman? Let us know and you'll get bands pestering you. Until then it doesn't help the bands - it just helps you by paying them less than you do the potwasher !

Oh no, we're not gonna scare another venue off are we?
OK the money aint brill (and you aint gonna get many bands playing for that!) but there's loadsa solo singers in Stockport area that may be tempted, especially with PA already there..just walk in with acoustic guitar and do a few songs for £40,,may get some ale as well?

If people dont wanna do it, dont do it...no need for bad comments...we need all venues we can get

I'm with Alec on this one. I used to be in the "beat them to death with sticks" fraternity when i used to see posts like this and I don't think constructive criticism such as that pointed out by Havoc 51 is amiss but these days I'm in the take it or leave it camp. They've set their stall out.

What Alec said. A solo artist with no gig should take it as a one off and get £40. How much do the individuals get in a 5 piece band?

Rick.

+1 Alec & Nic. If £40 doesn't suit you then don't hover, move on to the next blog.

You often hear folk opining in similar blogs that such a fee may "be good for a band trying to get on the circuit". Do venues not have the same startup issues?

This place may turn out to be a decent venue if it builds up so why piss on your chips if it does and they start offering what you *believe* to be a decent fee to everyone except NWBs...

Seeing £40 each is what a 5 piece band get with all hassle of setting gear up ...doesnt seem bad for a local solo artist who wants to do something better than yer standard open mic.
There are actually venues on here that pay less per man than that!

It certainly aint taking any work off anybody on here, its a new enterprise, good luck to 'em!
The more places that have 'live' music the better.

Call me DIVA would be interested but we would probably have to get another band to play with us. We do all originals though, would that be an issue?

Agreed, £40 is more than what we end up with once we've taken out band/van kitty etc.
In fact a couple of weeks back a venue was kind enough to deduct our beer money as well, even though we did the gig for a much lower rate. (bastards). Still that's a rant for another blog.

THE REASON FOR MY BLOG the flying dutchman stockport is that we have artists on saturday and sunday nights and they get the going rate we did have artists on friday but you got to ralise that its getting tougher out there and even the artists i no are getting cancelled this year at there gigs, so we had to cancel the friday nights gigs because we could not afford the rates some artists wanted which ment they got £150 i made £100 and its us who have to pay for staff heating etc i have a good pub and want people to come in and enjoy the night but money is getting tight for people the good times have gone and any new artist new to the scene will find it hard to get a gig and on the ladder even seasoned artists are struggling as we are so £40 for the gig is not that good but thats how it is out there and dont forget they start off for the buzz of a live audience and the love of the game . i had small bands saying its a great idea and use it as a practice night and single artists who want to get on the ladder and they may get bookings threw doing this gig so lets have it right im not after a freebie and not asking seasoned artists so no you dont have to get out of bed, but times are bad and venues getting smaller so think of that great comments mixture of both
