Most people record using computers, these days

I use a standalone multitrack recorder

I'm with Mark on this - multitrack recorder and some decent mics. And a lot of patience lol

And here's the kind of mindless bubblegum pop I achieve with my set-up ;)

Incidentally I've started a FB group for free downloads of original music. Just link your soundcloud. I know soundcloud is ok, but thought a dedicated FB page would be good. Encourage feedback from non muso FBers too (which is important)
Only did it yesterday night, so early days, but you're all welcome to join in. Its here

yeh stuck you on...its better to put them on individually so people can stay on FB site...also if you put them on staggered. If you just put em on en mass they will soon disappear down page...put one a week on or something...like you did on your first post here

Depends on the instrumentation, I would recommend some sort of Audio interface, whether it be USB or Firewire, 1 channel or 16 channels, It completely depends on what you want to record, how many channels you need to record your instrumentation, the capabilities of your computer and your budget.

Alec: I don't do facebook - shame that, wouldn't mind posting a lot of stuff, not that anyone would ever want to download it ;-)

Getting back to the OP I used to use multi-track devices (still have an Akai DPS16 lying under the bench I'm working on) but gradually swapped over to using the PC about 2 years ago. The PC I use is 6 years old and more than up to dealing with my stuff - some of which runs to 20-30 audio tracks with 12 or so playing simultaeneously! I use Cubase as a DAW.

I have a variety of audio interfaces including a Terratec 24/96 (£2-300), a Lexicon Alpha (£90) and a Steinberg C2 (~£120) however the vast majority goes through my Phonic HelixBoard 24 (a 16/2/2 firewire desk) which I picked up from DV247 for £200. Overkill for me, there's only one of me, could easily get by with the Lexicon alone ;-)

If you want to go the computer route then more than happy to go through what you should consider with you. If you want to go the multitrack route then you can probably pick one up s/h for quite a reasonable price. In fact, and continuing my anti-hoarding phase, could sell you the akai DPS16 (see http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/sep00/articles/akai.htm) for a reasonable price and throw in an hour or so's tuition.
