Playlist - Going down the pan...

Had a chat about this station with the guy's in the band, talking about some of the music it is playing. Just been in the car listening to it and was playing INXS 'devil inside' ? Then The Smiths came on...
I thought by ROCK it mean't ROCK music as in 'Heavy' Rock, as in ROCK bands etc. Surely INXS is POP music & Smith's Indie So ROCK FM is POP FM as in most Genre's? Just because it has a Rock beat to it does not make it ROCK music. Country and Western, Funk, (neo)R&B, all have elements of ROCK...May as well go back to XFM then...

Completely agree re: song list on RR - and not a wide range either, how many times do they have to play Sweet Child bla bla

To be honest, Drumbloke, I've had my doubts from the offset. They bill themselves as 'the northwest's only classic rock station', but on day one I heard 'Valerie' by The Zootons and 'Going Underground' by The Jam. Neither off these are classic rock - The Jam may be classic new wave, but The Zootons are just sh*te.

Also, the playlist is extremely repetitive given the amount of music they have to go at and they play very few album tracks, just singles. Now as a rock listener of good standing, I always thought rock was more about the albums and knowing all the music by bands, not just the tracks cherry picked by the record company 'cos they think it might make them a quick buck.

I think it is all summed up by the fact that Mike Sweeney constantly harps on about 'rock and roll' - well that's what Elvis and Buddy Holly played and NOT what Rush and Metallica and Thin Lizzy and G'n'R etc etc play.

As our bass player Steve says...... I wish Mike Sweeney would make his fookin mind up whether he's a "proppa" Salford scally or a posh cunt who's aaaawwfully well spoken..... as he seems to cross between the two all the time......

Yeah I noticed Mike has been dipping into the Thesaurus lateley..!

For me Planet Rock D.A.B. is the only station that knocks out Classic Rock tunes 24-7.

No one ever told ROCK FM that they should play rock, i hope thay RR isn't gradually sneaking into changing their format but it happens all the time in the USA and it would not be unusual for us to follow suit.

I hope not though!

Yes but they bill themselves as 'The Northwests only classic Rock radio station'....

Planet Rock is head and shoulders above, playlists and DJ's...

i mean im not a rock purist or anything, ive mentioned many times some of the dodgy stuff i listen to!!, but i can see both sides of it, its ok to step out into another genre sometimes as long as the bulk of it is rock stuff, its a tough one and interesting debate

It's not OK to step into other genres when you call yourself The Northwest's only 'classic rock' station.

Planet Rock and Pure Biker FM rule as far as i'm concerned.

We had a few years of key103 and galaxy and radio 1 at work. We now have Rock Radio, their worst tracks, Zutons, and indie stuff etc matches the others best. In between the dodgy stuff there is Metallica, Thin Lizzy, System Of A Down, Motorhead, Sex Pistols, The Stranglers and loads more good stuff, it's made a big difference to my work day. Also they have to appeal to as wide an audience as possible to get the numbers and the ad money to stay running. A bit like covers bands playing all the usual chart hits by classic rock bands. I like Pure Biker but can't get that at work.

I like rock FM, defo think its at least attempts to give us guitar driven music and on a fri evening its really good. Proper rock.

The problem with Rock FM is bloody SWEENEY, he's a scally and come one, he's the one who plays all the manc indie crap. Oasis etc. He's the guilty one.

Its ROCK FM (although it says Classic Rock) not HEAVY METAL FM so we have to give them some slack. Another problem is depending on your definitions of rock and metal, some would say Metallica is heavy metal others would say Rock, so we have to give them some leeway. NO FRICKIN' EXCUSE FOR AIRY FAIRY INDIE THOUGH...Get with it Sweeney or p**Soff to XFM.

all i know is i (along with sandwich slayer) have had to put up with key 103, galaxy fm and radio one for four years whilst working-after that to walk into work and hear "fuel", or "ace of spades", or "crossroads" is absolute HEAVEN!!!

When RR first came on the scene I tuned in on my car radio, but on a 20 minute ride to work in a morning all I ever head was 3 tracks !!!!!, the rest of the time was taken up by a couple of Dorks spouting complete and utter rubbish !!!, and then on the way home at night, the dreaded Sweeny prattling on !!!!, needless to say I have changed station --- the idea is a great one, but as someone else said earlier, they have loads and loads of album tracks to go at but they dont seem to have any idea !!!!
As for Sweeney ....... since he appreared back on the scene, it seems that his band has/had been getting quite a few local gigs ..... seeing as how most bands can wait for weeks to get on at venues, I do wonder how his band got gigs so quick ????, did some of the bands off here get cancelled in favour of him ???, I would be very interested to know about that ..... it just seemed to happen so very quick for him .... and regardless of his bands reputation I would hate to think that venues cancelled others to put him in !!!

Regards

G

Yes it seems to have watered down its playlist to a more AOR playlist and wont get fooled again can only be heard so many times but when you drive out of the signal area and have to listen to the 'tosh' on other stations (esp when you 4get yr cd's) it makes you appreciate that U2 or REM song .......(this rant has been edited for the safety of boring the reader )

Got to go along with Sandwich Slayer & Viking on this, RR stands head & shoulders above the other local stations for classic rock. I know they play some shit as well, specially when Sweeneys on the prattling git, christ he's nearly as old as me, should get somebody better informed methinks, I'm gonna delete him from my friends list on myspace as soon as:-)))
Seriousl guys if you feel really pissed of with RR you can always get in touch with them and air your concerns on the website, but at the same time remember they do give loads of shouts for our local bands about gigs and venues........infact I'm listening now and they've just mentioned some local gigs.

Yeah really do have to concede that the concept of Rock radio is much needed and yes the local gigs plug is a fantastic service.
But the tag 'Classic Rock' is still unfounded in my opinion..

I do agree on the Sweeney comments. "Car crash radio" sometimes, sorry Mike!! 1 minute he say's 'Manners cost nothing' then says 'A punch in the mouth says more than a thousand words can'..the latter is hardly a show of manners is it ?. where is he at!!
He goes on about chavs and scallies then proceeds to talk like one..He STILL goes on about the manc accent 'Hiyorr' 'Manchestorr', sorry but a bit 'old hat'..

i still like Planet Rock best, but spose if theyre all playing some rock then its better than dance sh*te
spose its hard to say what "rock" covers , for me id say its anything from AOR to death metal, i do like a bit of indie stuff but it often sits weird after hearing Ozzy!!

Thats a Manchester accent?? I thought those people were ill!! I've been giving them money out of the goodness of my heart because I assumed they were suffering! p.s. Just heard live version of Smoke on the water on RR turned it up and scared off any potential admirers in good style tee hee...
