What Venues do you miss?

some great memories

evening all,

with the live music scene changing so much so quickly, im just having a quick reminice over great venues from the last 10 years in previous bands.

Which venues do you miss? I used to love the Queens in Chorley - great gig, great crowd and great atmosphere whether you were playing or watching. Such a shame to see its been boarded up for so long.

Any one really miss any particular venue, and what made it great?

@ la bam good call for the queens/chorley ,so many pub/venues have closed ,funny you should put this blog up as i was going through our diarys the other day as i archive everything our band gets up to since we started 7 years ago & aprox 85% of the places we played have either just closed or have been made into all sorts eg : the jacksons arms (flats ) /chorley even the queens/chorley is being turned into housing eventually just like "the lamb" in preston & one of them is now a hardware store & one is even a indian restaurant ,more recently ""the golden cross " in oswaldtwistle ,what a great place to play & what a bloody shame & still boarded up .
Way to many to mention really & so many happy memories .

heard a lot about The Lamb, but never played there before it shut down.

there are venues that werent good, venues that were basically pubs with bands on now and again, then there were the special venues, where you came away with great memories because of the place and crowd.

i saw a lot of bands and faces off here in the queens in the past, pretty mental place and crowd, but thats what made it good!

my dad used to DJ in the cromwellian in the 60s, i'll ask him about bands...

Heard so much about Oscars in the past - why did that close?

Limelight in Crewe - didnt know that had shut down, they used to have some good acts on in there.

Come to think of it, Yates and Chicago Rock used to put top tribute bands on on Wednesdays 10 years ago - saw some belters! What happened to that?

Such a shame - sounds like there was loads of great venues around, i love the idea of afternoon bands too, dont see that hardly anywhere now!

Youd think with the cheap price of instruments nowadays and ebay, there would be bands playing everywhere - surely its easier to be in a band now than it ever has been.... even all the music, tab and videos are all free online.

Could definitely do with a bygone venue re-opening around the bolton / chorley / preston area.

The Amethyst club in Preston in the 1970s, where local bands regularly rubbed shoulders with rock legends such as Genesis Mick Abrahms band, etc, we played there several times, the last time we played there we were supporting a band called Sam apple pie www.google.co.uk/url

Also Preston public hall we played there 4 or 5 times, I saw Led Zep, David Bowie, Barclay James Harvest, and countless other well known bands there, its a shame they had to knock most of it down in order to build a road.

Jeepster Gaz - I'm just going through all my Guitarist magazine CDs (mainly from the mid 90s - late 00s) and ripping the best tracks from them before I sell them all as a job lot. Jan Cyrka did a few columns for that magazine in the 90s - phenomenal player!

Rick - Oscars used to be my favourite venue. Used to be there 2-3 nights per week in the 90s (when we first discovered the combined delights of ale and live music)! Really miss that place.

There was somewhere in Rochdale we played...upstairs...something like Candlelight or Gaslight??...or did I dream it?
Dunno why Oscars closed, although it was near end of lease, and was beginning to get a bit 'tired' decor wise. I think Gay and co had just had enough....
When Gay left they got some complete dick head in...one of them flash harry's..."I've had loadsa pubs etc"....I ran the NW Songwriting Comp there and turned up for one heat to find it locked...loadsa people travelling from all over NW too...he'd just stripped the place and done a runner.

Me and a couple of guys tried to buy it, but Bolton Council wouldn't let us have it, despite getting backing of local MP's and Arts Council and stuff...their preferred use was a women only gym...

Still looking back, I'm glad now our application failed

Hawthorns had a fire a few years ago, and is now sadly demolished :(

The Carlton in Burnley was brilliant in its day but has been boarded up for years now. Last time I looked, the owners wanted £250k for it. I wish them all the luck in the world getting that price in a town which has no shortage of empty pubs.

@Nighttrain - The White Lion in Huddersfield (Piggys) was a great venue and pub. It closed when the new shopping centre was to be built but the plans changed and it's sstill there! (council eh? piss ups and breweries). It's now a horrible "chain" pub/bar, Revolution.
Shame, it was a proper old fashioned English pub (for people who are lucky enough not to have visited Huddersfield, it looked a bit like Sinclairs in manchester).
There was also the Albion in Huddersfield, opposite the police station, became Bogeys downstairs, bands on every weekend and always rammed, late 80s/early 90s. Happy days

What about some of the 'characters' in these venues - thats what helps makes them!

I remember a punk girl in chorley who was funny as fook, always dancing and up for a laugh and a bloke called Jimmy ? who used to ride his bike around with a can of bitter where the water bottle should be, and try to get on stage with the bands to play his harmonica! - saw him do an Eminem number once?! Then youd see him wheel barrowing his equipment to the local when he was gigging so he didnt have to drive!

Always used to see a good proportion of the same crowd that used to follow bands about too, great to see!

The Limelight was the first venue I ever played where it felt like I was "on stage" rather than just setting up in a corner. Sound was done by the Dave Gilmore look a like Shep and Alf did the lights (well he flashed them on and off) ;-)

Loved the venue but sadly after Ray left it was taken over by a team who fleeced the bands (i.e saying there were 105 in total when we counted 220 ten minutes prior to us going to stage) which in turn affected the bands who were loyal to the venue. The result was a sharp downturn in quality and the punters left in their droves sadly.

Best wishes

Of all the pubs still open in Horwich, the Crown is still potentially the best of the lot for live music, if only for the size and layout of the pub. What a shame they don't utilise it more.

@ Mick....It was great Mick in there. Big stage big room cheap beer loads of bikers and great bands.
I even saw Wolfpack from Bolton there once. I used to work there and was made redundant in 1990 so it must have been 88 / 89 when I saw them. bloody hell, showing my age now ha ha ha.

@ La Bam....yeah i remember watching a few at the bay horse but the crown had and probably still has great potential at being a great venue.

the crown would be a great venue - big inside, loads of rooms, big car park and on 2 major bus routes from manchester and preston. All the credentials, only its a bit of a pensioners pub nowadays, and they wouldnt like loud music!

The Toll Bar across the road used to be a rock pub in the early 90s. Have the majority of rock pubs disappeared?

@G-IT-22 The Riverside was THE place in the 80s - early 90s The guest acts were always top class. Acts like Greengage - Winston - Reg Coates - Black Onyx - The Whizz Kids and of course Bernard Manning and Chubby Brown. The compere ( as you put it ) was Johnny Martin who in the late sixties supported many many top bands before buying in to the Riverside. He is still a massive draw on the odd occasion that he appears around these parts. The tune you were referring to is Secret Love by Doris Day and he had the Riverside bouncing every week. His version of In Dreams was the best I have ever heard apart from the Big "O" himself. All in all the Riverside was the best nightclub Wigan has ever seen.

And just to top all that it was where I first met my wife!!!

Riverside Wigan--- grab a granny :-) and John Martin AKA (real name) Melvin Leatherbarrow was dreadful.... used to get in free as I was on Wigan books-

Didnt see any good acts there as I only started to go in early 90s used to stay there till about 1 then off to Pemps :-)

Lots of Love for Black Dog Ossy- I loved playing there Jay was a character- i played every Sunday - the off friday and even a few thursdays there- MAAAD!

John Martin - In his seventies now and still commanding £1000 per night - he must be really shite. -Riverside - Busiest night club in Wigan for 20 years+ - must have been really bad. - No good acts - see line up above. - Reality check needed methinks.

I was lucky enough to play some very diverse gigs and stages back in the 80's and early 90's - the Queens in Chorley I remember because they wouldn't let us go and kept shouting aggressively for more - scared me half to death - we ran out of songs and just started picking back through the set list again.
the Kings arms and the Lamb in Preston though I remember with particular affection, both small venues and each 3 doors down from the other
I recall doing an interval swap around and actually playing both bars in the same night and neither management minded in the least (you often bumped into the manager of one in the other).
The Lamb was probably my favourite though - there was just something about stepping up 6 inches onto that stage with the place packed to the rafters, particularly on a bank holiday weekend. you could make twice as much money in the pot as you took from the management. I think at one point i virtually lived in those two places.
can't see how a manager ever made them pay tho!

The Lamb and the pub around the corner were the first two places that sprung to mind. However the old Darwen Library Theatre was a brilliant venue. It still is but when it was all standing it had so much more potential. Frankys Bar was also a good venue years ago when it was the Central Club. It is now burned down which is an absolute tragedy - upstairs was the old bingo hall, an 800 capacity standing venue with balcony. Rumours are that it was an insurance job......if this is true then I would throw away the key..... or chop their hands off!

yep thats what im thinking - are the days of the venues where there was always something going on, that were frequented by musicians and fans alike disappeared? There used to be one in every town, now it seems its a big uphill battle to get funding, council permits and licences and to get people in. Once destroyed these places are very difficult to get going again. i bet it took years and years to build them up.

Completely shameless post to keep this worthwhile topic part of the 'community gold rather than being replaced by the pathetic squabbles going on on other threads.

Otherwise this piece of history and memories will be replaced with the worst example of this site and be lost forever.

For the people who frequented this place in the 70's.

Nothing can ( or could ) compete with:

THE REGENT Penny St.Blackburn. R.I.P.

The finest layout for bands I've ever seen (and I've seen a few).
Best ever Jam Nights/Open Mike Nights bringing in tremendously talented Musicians in
from far and wide.
I doubt that a venue like that will ever see the light of day again.
