NWB - Instant Messaging

For? Against?

Just been working on an IM (instant messaging) script for another web project, and there's no reason why it couldnt be a new feature on NWB. The reason I've strayed away from IM in the past is because as a community I thought best to keep all conversations out in the open. However, I can see some benefit for IM.. for people who dont use MSN, Yahoo, or Facebook.

The script its by no means as advaned as Facebook/myspace IM, but would be a simple way to have a "real time" conversation with a NWB member.

For? Against?

Good idea as long as you have an option whether or not you wish to be contacted that way!

Will there be an on/off switch?

h'mmm-as an "oldie" i find it rather hard to keep up the conversation without reverting to "last thing saturday night gobbledygook" through typos. i could see the attraction for the younger nwb members and those of nimble typist-type fingers, though? plus-the im facility can be, pretty much,a reasonable way to have a conversation? :-)

I'm a long time moderator on another forum. I saw 2 attempts to get Instant Messaging running. The novelty lasted about 3 months both times and then it was occupied by the same half dozen people twice a month or so.

THere's nothing at all wrong with that. I'd just balance the amount of initial work involved with the long term value.

Of course it COULD be a good way of passing late cancellation info around....?

If you only intend logging on for 5 mins to update something say, last thing you would want is feeling obliged to engage in a lengthy conversation!

good point... but should still be optional when you log in.

isn't the comm blog faster, more likely to reach a wider audience and easier (for some) to access?

too be honest, I never use facebook messenger, and I personally am happy with the way NWB works at the moment. Making some good friends on here and having a laugh at the same time without the need for messenger. That's not to say I wouldn't give it a try if is was implemented.

I like things the way they are. IM is good, but conversations don't last on there. (once you close the window, puff, they are gone). Whereas, having all this on community blog is better cos those who you want to chat to that aren't logged in, can still read your message afterwards.

I agree with the main here, I have an instant live chat on our website, and it don't get used...mainly because theres very rarely enough people on at the same time. But its up mto you Mr NWB..

Keep the conversation open to all so I'd say NO.

IM is useful, but not really 'community' based. I think if we give a group of like minded people the opportunity to retreat into their own group then they will.

@ Shell

Most of the IM facilities out there are a voluntary function that you activate yourself when on the site. I don't think it'd be troublesome, and it's cool that Mr NWB has thought of offering it. All we have to do is weigh the value. :o)

Don't we already have a kind of IM if you switch to PM - and you don't have to stay on it 'cos the nifty little bit at the top tells you when you've got a new message, plus you can keep up with the blogs so evry which way a winner! Up to you Paul, but I think if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I type with one finger, so I think I would be too slow to have a decent conversation,
Rick. ( I started typing this half an hour ago ) LOL.

I thought I'd found it in tesco next to the instant mash. It turned out to be something entirely different though. :o(

i like the time lag bettween comments, it gives you time to make another brew and plate of mash.

Some interesting comments there folks. Personally, I think that if you want to IM, then you can swap MSN,YAHOO ids, via a pm, and communicate that way.

Although, I do know that some people have requested an IM style facility.

It wouldnt be too hard to implement coding wise.. and possibly the default option would be to turn off IM unless you explicity decide to be contactable via IM. Obviously, you will only be able to IM nwb members you are friends with.

seriously though, joking apart, if you want to have a proper conversation all you need to do is phone up and talk, if no body replies to your comments, its no big deal, they have either gone out, gone to bed or the thread has peter,d out. Liquid Magma And Oxygen.

I suppose if you are an MSN user or a Yahoo type person you could always PM your details to a like minded other. That would give you the option to talk whenever, with whoever you choose to share your details with whilst remaining a certain amount of anonymity if you choose to do so... gawd does that make sense?..i'm on my second bottle of red ..it's been a stressful week..lol

I agree with Horsie, I just can't see people making much use of an IM facility on here. I don't know about everyone else but my visit pattern here seems to be frequent but short once here - enough to keep up to date with everything and post the odd blog but certainly not long enough to be able to engage in full conversation. NWB is an open message board which brings bands, venues and music fans together - lets keep it that way.

I'd prefer a chat feature to IM as then everyone can join in!

How about a live chatroom instead, where folk can drop in and drop out so to speak. Most that I have seen do have a temporary IM Feature while you are in chat, think they are based in Java.

Dont know what folks views on that are?

Worth a try to see how it goes, if it doesn't work it can be scrapped at a later date.
