what do you hear and think "that guitar sound is awesome"
im gonna have a think but id say John Sykes on Whitesnakes 1987 and Eddie Van Halens on their debut album now theres a surprise Roberto
Clapton's on the Bluesbreakers' "Beano" album...Gary Moore's "Still Got The Blues"...Steve Vai's on "Eat'em and Smile"...+ Eddie's on "Van Halen"I'm sure there's loads more I like!
i know i'll probably get slated for this but i honestly think one of the best guitar sounds ever recorded is on "costello music" by the fratellis. the sound that guy get just from a tele is amazing. i could listen to it over and over again! but on a more standard choice the beano album is amazing!
the intro guitar sound on opeth's - still life, is breath taking.you gotta hear entombed's guitar sound! crunchiest ever (have a listen to wolverine blues)i am still searching for 'the sound'
Nunos guitar on pornograffit gets my vote. You can tell he had a great sound, and "sounded" fun to play with.
Mick from Bad Horsie will choke at this but for me it's Zakk Wylde on No More Tears. (he's not the biggest Zakk fan in the world lol)
I'll go for more chilled out sounding tunes, for example Brian May on the track Bijou from The Album Innuendo. Also another one for you - Dave Gilmour on the track Castellorization from his album On an Island.Great sounding guitar. :)
Frank Zappa has a nice spectrum of guitar sounds from his dirty and / or distorted Gibson thru to the 'glassy' crystal clean strat sounds. Jeff Beck as no one play's it quite like he does. Billy Gibbons on any old ZZTOP lp. And a 'way out there' one - Charlie Hunter. Guitar / Bass / Keyboard lines and riffs through a plethora of effects pedals all by the one man and one guitar...
I think Gilmour's sound on the original issue of Dark Side of the Moon (before they remastered it and destroyed the dynamics) is incredible. The way his solos kick in on Time and Money still knocks me for six when I listen to it. Skipping genres, Reg and Dave's guitar harmony sounds on the Chameleons debut album, Script of the Bridge is just incredible. Nobody before or since has emulated it either - not bad for an album recorded with cheap gear in Cargo studios in Rochdale!

Nuno is my no1 player.I also love Jake E Lee on the Bark at the Moon album, Steve Vai on Eat em and Smile, and ALL the guitar sounds on the Electric Boys, Lips'n'Hips album.
adrian smith's somewhere in time is up there for me.. along with the others... Steve Vai on Eat em and Smile Neal Schon on most journey albums Nunos guitar on pornograffiti John Sykes on Whitesnakes 1987
I can't believe no one has mentioned the amazing sound of Concorde Faceripper from Lawnmower Deth on the near legendary Return Of The Fabulous Metal Bozo Clowns album :-DEgg Sand....wich \m/
yep zakks sound on no more tears is huge and Slashs sound on appetite is totally unique and is just totally identifiable straight away John Petruccis sound on Awake or scenes from a memory (all 15 grands worth lol) Brian May on anything but especially the songs like Headlong or The Show Must Go On Angus and Malcolm Young on the album Let There be rock, blistering Marshall power(and not actually very distorted) Jeff Beck has always sounded brilliant, how did he get that amazing sound on "i aint superstitious" and last but not least Stevie Ray Vaughan on the album Pride and Joy
and one of the very first guitar heros, Mr Hank Marvin on any shadows song, brilliant tone, nobody ever nails that same tone(although theres a brilliant busker in Manchester who has one of his signature models who sounds very very close indeed)
Chris Isaac.
re hank marvin There was an article in Total Guitar mag a few years ago, where by a hank marvin fan was trying to get the "hank tone", and spent £1ks on guitars, equipment, effects e.t.c - but could still never get it sounding like hank. The geezer, actually meet Hank one day, and was allowed to play on hanks actual guitar, and guess what... he still sounded nothing like Hank! Guess a lot of the tone is in the fingers.
Hey Scott, thought I was one of the few Lawnmower Deth fans out there ha ha. But others half's choices are Jeff Healy - See the Light Dave Mustaine - So Far, So Good, So What Bernie Marsden - Walking in the Shadow of the Blues My personal choice would be Randy Rhodes on anything, cos it just sounds right.....but I am just a singist.....
oh god yeah you cant beat a bit of SRV. you seen the live at the el mocambo dvd rob? the sound he gets out of a strat is truly staggering. i hate strats but that dvd alwasy makes me want to go out and get one!

Lawnmower Deth - LOL they've done a rendition of The Osmons' "Crazy Horses" Well amusing.Such is the power of Spotify :)
Sam from Phoenix You gotta hear it. . . Awsome.
there's quite a few for me, but-up at the top, or near, is ted nugent with "wang dang sweet poontang" live on "double live gonzo"-ear splitting, decibel breaking shredding at its best. :-0
the solo on Lizzy's 'Sara' sends shivers down my spine, never would've though that such an amount of treble & chorus could sound so mellow
Scott Gorham, still in love with you from L&D
ah! if we're talking about "hairs on the back of the neck time"???
Little Feat....slide guitar on Roll em Easy from the Dixie Chicken album......cooks!
Shenker's sound on the Walk on water album. (sorry about the spelling)
my word how did i miss Schenker on strangers in the night live, i think thats one tone i subconciously try and get near to if poss(i wish)
Most of the guitar sounds on Steffen Schackingers ElectricGuitartistry are pretty flippin' haunting too.
What about bassists??? they av great sounds?
# Posted by without reason - 23/06/2009, 12:39 (GMT) What about bassists??? they av great sounds? Start your own thread, Mr Billy Lead Bass! lol!
Frank Zappa on any of the live material from 1984 & 1988 (try 'Guitar', 'Make A Jazz Noise Here' or 'The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life'Larry Carlton on Steely Dan's 'Kid Charlemagne'the guitar sounds on Metallica's Black Album are all darn good, despite it not being the 'hardcore' purists Metallica album of choiceJoe Bonamassa's guitar sound on anything is incredible... 'So Many Roads' from 'Live From Nowhere In Particular' is just perfectI thought the Airbourne album had some perfect ACDC style tonesThe Smiths' 'Hatful of Hollow' is a goldmine of great, inventive guitar tonesdo I need to say David Gilmour's 'Comfortably Numb' guitar solo sound is great? goes without sayingI love the guitars on Radiohead's OK Computer...Where You Been by Dinosaur Jr... good tones on that too
