when are you too old????

As some of you will know, out on bail are a fairly mature ( old !!!) classic rock band. Trouble is some of us , me included, love more up to date stuff than others in the band. Every time a number is mentioned that falls outside the classic rock catergory a couple of the guys say thats not for us or words to that effect, bands like rage against the machine, audo slave and other kick arse bands. Who's right ?? is it so ugly for an older band to do stuff like this or not, even if we did it well, which is my argument. What do younger bands think ??

another of their so called arguments is "no one will know it " they dont seem to realise how diverse peoples tastes are, think they are all as limited as they are. annoys the crap out of me !!!!!!!!

Oh put an old head on these young shoulders any day, people often ask at gigs how the feck do I know all these 'old Punk tunes' (I'm 25 btw the baby of the band) - the answers easy, me POPS. Same goes for classic rock, give me ACDC/Sabbath/Rush etc. any day over this modern day bag o shite (although admittedly there have been a few decent tunes out recently).

Hope it ain't Simon who is causing the problem???
End of the day you don't want to be caught in a time warp. If it feels good and you can do it justice, do it.

If you play it well you get my nod.

I know what you mean about it maybe feeling a little 'odd' with all your experience you should put a slant on the tune, this way you can play it well but put a little distance from the original and maybe a little distance from the contemporary feeling.

GO FOR IT

No age limit in music.

Would they play the songs in 25 years when it eventually becomes a part of the classic rock song list ?

this thread reminded me of something that happened to me a few weeks back in a pub. before we play we stick a cd of background music on with a bit of everything that we play ie beatles, the who, the jam etc
i was stood at the bar and mustve been quietly singing along when some condisending old bastard approached me said "you shouldnt know these tunes, your far too young (im 23!)" he gave me a massive lecture on how i couldnt possibly appreciate the impact those bands had in his day and what that music meant!
you shouldve seen his face when we started playing. one of those mastercard moments, absolutely priceless! haha

Don'y you just love people with thier own set of rules that they then expect to apply to everyone else regardless of how narrow thier perameters may be? I'm curious from a purist point of view was B.B.King playing by these "rules" when he recorded with U2? If me and my fellow old geezer Blue Slickers wanted to do "I predict a riot" 'cause we like it what would be the problem? Both young and old would know it, and what if I decided to cover "Fate of nations" by Robert Plant, would that not be ok? Even though it's recorded by a Singer even older than me the song isn't yet thirty years old so is it "Classic rock"? Pigeon holes are for pigeons...

I wonder if the guy who said, "you shouldnt know these tunes, your far too young..", tried the same line with a classical orchestra's pianist??..

"Home come you know all these Mozart tunes? They're way before your day! It was a proper mad time back in 1777 when Amadeus was flying around the keys like nobody's business!..but what do you know!?.. you never experienced the impact of the Austrian wonder!"

..You should have told the fella that The Beatles, The Who and The Jam "DID" make a very big impact, because it made YOU want to pick up an instrument and learn to play it!

I don't think age is particularly relevant. We just pick popular songs and put them in therapy.

I think as long as you do a good version of a tune, it doesn't matter who you are or how many times you've orbited the sun...

i think old guys who are still rocking are the BEST :) because they didn't give up when they didn't become megastars... like the posers who you know ain't in it for life, who'll not even own a guitar or a drum kit any more at 40

and another thing...!

I used to equate energy & kick-assness in music with youthfulness... it's only now I'm in my late 30's that I've realised it's not really anything to do with your age... everyone was amazed that the reunited Led Zeppelin sounded as energetic and heavy as they always did when they were in their 20's... but it just proves age isn't much of a factor...

Metallica are probably playing live as heavy, hard & fast as they ever did, and they're all, what late 40's? 50's?

I have to say, i'm rather glad to be 38 and probably a better musician and kicking more ass with my instrument than I ever did.. it's great being old :D

LOL 38 aah yes, I remember 38. Don't worry Steve, you WILL be old, and it's still just as much fun and you still put 120% into every song.

We are having the same argument at the moment, but not with the era just the genre. We play classic rock, from 50's thru to 90's, but one of ours is in a mega sulk at the moment cos we won't do some of his suggestions.....I'm sorry if this makes me unpopular, but, to me you play the music that the audience wants not that one member wants, just cos its their favourite, shit if we worked that way we'd be doing everything from Simon and Garfunkel to Cradle of Filth, not a set list I would want to work on. I agree with if it works go with it, but if its a bloody durge thats gonna empty the pub leave it alone....right rant over.....

....still ranting.......our ages are from 34 thru to 60yrs old. Age isn't the issue its whether it fits....

yeah you have to keep it real and not go from one extreme to the other but the songs i'm talkin about are all from rock, heavy rock and middle of the road metal bands .

We solved the problem!!! The guy who didn't want to do anything bar stuff that was so far away from the rest has had enough, give up and gone...problem solved, now we do the stuff that fits.............obviously not a soloution for everyone :)
