Groundhogs Tony McPhee Suffers Stroke
24th June 2009

The Groundhogs’ Tony McPhee has had a stroke which has caused him to lose the ability to speak.

The band had been due to play a handful of shows in the UK and Europe later this summer, but these shows will obviously be affected.

A post on the band’s official website by his wife Joanna says:

“Tony McPhee had a stroke on 16th June 2009, he has lost the ability to speak, but is making progress towards recovery. This will affect some gigs which have been planned over the next couple of months so please contact venues for details.

“I am keeping fans informed via the newsletter, if you wish to receive this just contact me on joanna@thegroundhogs.co.uk, please use the same address to email Tony any well wishes, (he's got an iPhone & knows how to use it!).”

Get well soon, Tony. We hope to see you back on your feet and out on the road very soon.

yeh, I been a fan since I saw them at The Octagon in Bolton, way back...I was at Free Trade Hall too. We booked em a few years ago to play a private gig for us in Bolton.....Pete Methy took Tony out around Bolton's pubs in afternoon....many years later Pete went to see Tony solo at a blues fest, Tony remembered him, and did a special acoustic version of 'Cherry Red' for him.....good bloke.
We had been hoping to support them at a gig this December...ah well

Yeh, get well soon Tony!

@ rob dog- real sorry to hear that- saw him twice (with the groundhogs) in manchester in the seventies, promoting "thank christ for the bomb"-absolute blistering stuff!!! a very, very underated influence on music as we know it today? hope he makes a full recovery. :-/
