Looking for advice on a new rig

I am in the market for a new bass rig.....what do you recommend (and why:) )

I am currently looking to purchase a new quality bass rig. Been searching for a while.....well, until I went dizzy !%£&^

So what do you recommend?

my specs....
I play SABBATH stuff (mainly)
I live in an upstair flat ?(so not too heavy (weight wise))
I use a Spector Euro4LX 4 string guitar (I think....not been able as yet to trace the actual guitar and it differs a little from said model)
I have a budget UP TO (and definately not beyond) £1,500
It has to last, a long time, and take plenty of use/abuse
and most important.....it has to be loud and COOL :)

small print
Salespersons of inferior/not to spec/trying to offload type goods will be hung, drawn and quartered before being stitched back together prior to being shot with a very slow bullet whilst worked upon with a very impressive array of high voltage electrodes. :)

Go for Eden, refreshingly expensive like Stella but very good.

I tried lots of rigs and eventually went to Eden. If your doing sabbath stuff and want it to sound authentic then you will need to be thinking 15" speakers. I'd rather have 10" speakers for that more modern tighter sound.

Have a look at the web site and forum and if you want to I have a couple of rigs set up here in Blackburn you can have a play with.

I have a 1 x 15 XL
2 x 15 XLT
2 x 10 XST
2 x 10 XLT
4 x 10 XLT
2 x 10 Metro
WT550

these are all set up and your more than welcome to come over for a play or bring your rig so that you can hear a difference in sound etc.

+1 For Eden. not exactly lightweight but indestructable.
Might be worth joining BassChat as there is loads of info, reviews etc on there.
I use a MarkBass/Zoot rig and it's light as a light thing on light day. Cuts through the mix really well and is as loud as hell.
Probably a bit too clean for what you are after.

Ampeg SVT most definelty. Great amp for rock and metal. otherwise a nice Warwick rig is nice too

A lot of people like Eden & Mark bass stuff but I'm not too keen on it myself, although its good for doing funk and soul stuff.

I don't really think you can do much better than Ampeg when it comes to Rock music

Like Stu says the Mark bass stuff is extremely clean so it probably wouldn't suit a bit of the old Sabs

I play all classic rock through my Eden gear and it will kick any ampeg rig into the floor, I have had SVT, Trace, Ohm, and marshal and the eden stuff is far superior, you can play clean for funk etc and it sounds great or you can rock it right up and it growwllllssss

Wt 550 is only 20lbs and the 2x10 cabs are 59lbs

Have to disagree about the Eden stuff I'm afraid, I used it for about 6 months and was less than impressed, I think Ampeg wins hands down every time. Then again its all down to personal taste really and remember that there is no "superior sound" as such just "your sound". Try them all out before you decide I suppose they all have plus and minus points, you just need to find something to suit you

If you are a Black Sabbath Tribute Band don't you need to do the full Geezer trip???
Not sure what he used to use but wouldn't mind betting it was Laney as they are a Brummie band.

Here's an email from Geezer about the basses he used in the 70's:

I used Laney amps and Laney cabinets [mainly 4x12] in the early 70's; I gradually switched to various pre-amps going through Crown power amps and custom built JBL speaker cabinets. I started off with a Fender Precision bass, but was forced to switch to a Dan Armstrong plexiglass bass when someone in Canadian customs chopped up my Fender [its a long story]. After that, i had custom made John Birch and Jaydee basses, and occasional Rickenbackers.
Geezer.

It would be nice to go the whole hog and use the same stuff as geezer, but my budjet wouldn't accomodate it at the moment, especially since I would need to include custom made John Birch or Jaydee basses too.
Laney amps are certainly a possibillity...will be trying a couple over the next week.

Blag Sabbath,
I have a full Laney rig for sale which would compliment the 'sabbath' look!
Its a Laney Richter 300w head, Laney 4x10 cab and a Laney 1x15 cab.Perfect working order, had it a while so it has that ' lived in ' look!! £350 the lot.

That's a result on the Laney gear. Not exactly lightweight but keeps it original.
Here's a JD for you. Should have enough left from your budget.
