NWB - Community Blog

Yeah I mentioned it one of my posts the other day.. Would be a good day that.. At the end of the day we all get work from nwbands so would be nice to give something back!

Only problem I forsee is the massive costs involved with setting it up (Stage hire, lights, sound engineers and of course the hire of the area itself, whether it be a field or a large enough music venue).. How about a large pub central to everyone on here offering their services? I'm sure they'd jump at the chance given drink sales etc..

we would jump at the chance also. as has been mentioned the only issue aside from organising it all is cost. theres used to be an event in a park in barnoldswick, i dont think it was an annual event but they held it over a full day and it was great. all sorts of bands and just a great time had by all. i would be more than willing to help out in any way possible.

The "Backdoor music project" [who have an account on NWB] organise this type of event all the time!
May be a lot less stressful for Paul to let them sort it all?
They have the no-how and experiance of the ins and outs with regulations and permits etc.

as i said above im more than happy to help out in anyway possible.
scotts idea is interesting, if you took it a bit further....
think how many bands are on here, now they all organise their own gigs which means we've got a massice selection of people who are experienced and knowledgable about gigs and events, albeit on a smaller scale.
so for instance if one person takes the helm and then designates jobs out to volunteers it may make it a bit easier. as opposed to one person sorting venue, time/date, bands, food/drink etc. you can have one "events manager" with various volunteers going back to them with prices/options etc. i hope this makes sense to anybody reading it!

There needs to be chain of command to make such a big event run smooth!

I am a festival director for the transport Festival (av attendance 45000) held annually up here in Fleetwood, so I have plenty of contacts/experience . Its a massive undertaking putting a festival together but not so difficult. Costs are always the biggest hurdle. Sponsorship from major manufacturers/suppliers is one avenue for funding.
I believe Stanley Park in Blackpool make the amphitheatre available at little or no cost for this type of event.
I would be more than willing to put my time in if anyone is willing to give it a try.

If we were to start making calls and getting the groundwork underway now, there should be plenty of time. Best time July would be 2nd week end (kids about to break up and hopefully no holidays booked by bands or punters). You thinking one stage area? spaces for merchandising/food etc?

NWB RockFest. a fitting tribute to Paul and Vicky. I have made so many friends and had so much fun thanks in no small part to the time and effort Paul and Vicky have given to this site.

Why not have a word with the guys who run Whatfest in Cheshire?? We played there last year and it was great.. Just thinking about the organisers etc.. Might be helpful..

Got a couple of pals that organise Fleetwoodstock each year, I have a meeting arranged later next week so I could always draw on their knowledge base. Yeah Whatfest guys would also be able to give out some helpful stuff.

We'd be interested - but the location really needs to be central to where all the bands are located. people aren't going to travel to the furthest edge of the area.

A Sunday would the only option for us, as one of our guitarists teaches guitar professionally and would not be available during shop hours on a Saturday. And more people are going to be off work on a Sunday.

I would suggest names out of a hat for the running order (no 'favourites' topping the bill, please) and a contingency for playing indoors in case the weather turns unseasonably vile.

It's a great idea and very achievable given the level of knowledge, experience and equipment we have in the NWB community. I'm with Mr NWB on the cautious side though. It needs organisation, funding and dedication.

First step should be a get together of all those that have the skills and time to dedicate to the project to discuss location, logistics, and resources (inc finance and funding).

agreed that the first job should be venue and the neverybody can decide from there whether they want to get involved or not.

Location,Location. What do you guys consider to be best? Centrally located for the bands or best area for pulling in the crowds? It is nice getting to play in your own back yard but maybe, just maybe taking the band out to newer audiences would be as attractive.If the funding could cover bands traveling costs ( and a beer or two for the bands, then it would be another good reason to gig.

It seems Sunday is the preferred option for all the reasons stated above, and more likely that bands are available on Sundays as well.

people need to be aware that everything isnt gonna be a field of roses and some people might have to travel a bit and some people might not get the slot they wanted. but at the end of the day somebody is gonna be organising this and its only gonna start causing headaches if everyone starts bitching about tiny things. so from the off can we all just say we're gonna take it all in good humour and try and be as accomodating and helpful as we can?

I know a bloke who would possibly be well into this. He organised the Pickup bank festival years ago. He has a farmhouse and 8 acres up on the moors just north of Bolton..which is central for Manchester/Burnley/Blackburn etc etc
He has just had an acoustic festival (last week) which was a small affair but a trial...portaloos/tents etc...he told me earlier this year he was looking to have a full festival next year..just a thought.

Bands, Sound, Lights, Food, Stage Management, Merchandise, Advertising. Must have most if not all here on nwb. I can certainly help with the background admin/legal/negotiational stuff. I also can call in sound/lighting engineers.Got a good H&S Team that will handle al the replacement for common sense paperwork ( Risk Assesments Safety Policy etc)
Perhaps all those wanting to get involved should arrange a meet up to lay out a provisional plan

Good point Fix, to make something like this work you have got to enjoy doing it.

I can help out where required, obviously from a bit of a distance, but I am very good on the phone...and exceptional at begging letters!!! Have done charity fundraising for years, and have a few connections in the right places (my mates hubby organizes festivals) metalfest etc...

While it is true that between us we have enough equipment to be heard from Mars! who is gonna want to leave there £1000's an £1000's of pounds worth of PA's systems handing round for other people to use and abuse?
Being realistic it is unlikely anyone let alone everyone will be hanging around by the stage all day watching every single band?
Where would you get the staging for the stage? what about parking and access for bands and there vehicles/equipment? who will police the event in terms of the actual on the spot organisation and co-ordination of everything that happens on the day?
Insurance has to be taken into account and who's gonna pay it?
The Police may also want to oversee and police the event and may want payment for there time?
This brings me back to my first surrgestion?

They usually do it for charity's or for raising funds for their own activities so someone needs to approach them cap in hand and see if it can financially viable?

Keef is a great Muso man and a godsend in his own right but without the backing of council funding could he really manage to pull this off?

the last quote I heard for a legal mini one day festival (at Leverhulme Park in Bolton) was £10000 all in (security/sound/lights/sanitation/police/fencing etc etc

There are possibly enough bands to make it a two-dayer. Which could point to an indoor venue.
There must be a raft of Labour Clubs etc which would have a big enough room available (bearing in mind weddings, etc).

Crowd pulling is important yes - a big reason to keep it central.
if (for example) the fest venue was decided to be Southport, the people on the Rochdale end would have a long way to go and vice versa. A long way to go to see a band do 40-45 minutes. It needs to be somewhere in the middle.

Back Door could be a way round the equipment/rigging issues as well as the logistics and organising, but would it then be an NWB initiative?

In order to reduce the amount of work and support, perhaps we should consider a site/venue that requires minimum costs an setting up.

If we can put together a positive plan, We can at least look to Council/Corporate/Business funding

it's a great idea and you can count me in for an appearance - and i for one am quite happy and willing to do it totally unpaid.

I think we showed at the NWB showcase that an event can be held with no ego problems / bitching etc etc ..... all we need to do is ramp up the scale a bit.

We might want to start thinking about a strictly play for free policy - if there's costs involved regarding venue,licences, insurance,police etc etc etc I don't think its feasible to pay the acts - seeing as it was suggested as a thank you to mr & mrs Bands.

This would maybe make the list of bands who want to play more manageable ....... with absolutely no bad reflection on the bands who would wish to decline.

Just a thought.

From the folk i've already gotten to know on here I wouldn't think it would be a problem.

Plus you get the opportunity to sell your own merchandise!!

haha although accrington would be gr8 for us (very local!) i was never really keen on the attic when we played there. dont know why. its a bit small as well.
but maybe its better to pack a place out than be playing in the middle of a field to 25 people?

Accy sounds good. Multi venue/Stage would work well. Also Paul's home town . Reasonably central as well. Could possibly organize for Paul to be chauffeured into the event in a Ferrari 355 !!

Not sure if Scotts gonna be up for gigging with Metaleeka on one stage then over to the Warners for a set with Jeni! Red bull on draught then Scott? lol

Is there a social club or something similar, we have a very large hall full stage, inhouse PA etc, but way to far out, but if a little tiny village in North Wales has one....:)
The other idea is the local theatres. The Mold theatre near us do a charity night for bands, what they do is take 40% of all ticket sales on the day or days as payment, and they open the bar and restaurant too. Its a massive event and usually 10-15 bands over 2 days. The theatre make quite a lot of money, so perhaps this could be an idea?

Bolton would obviously suit me pretty well, but as that's not my main concern I'd like to suggest The Boulevard in Wigan as a perfect venue (except for the parking issue). Lights and PA are there and it's a great sized area to play into. Colin would very likely be up for it.

Wherever it ends up being, a venue would probably have to be booked in the next couple of months.

Location wise - I would've thought Manchester would be best. Given that we all travel all over for gigs anyway I can't see it being a big issue for the bands, moreso the chance of getting as many punters in as possible...

Blue Slickers would love to be involved and would help in any way we could, little discussion point though, how would we avoid the overt repitition of certain songs? There are enough set lits on NWB that feature the same (say) twenty songs and I know (and I say this without prejudice!) that all bands would love to believe their version the best, so who would decide, especially in a shortened set who would play what?

Just another thought, geographically central doesn't necessarily mean easy for people to get to - for example if punters go with the intention of getting battered, then public transport might have to come into the equation...

No where is central for us, but Manchester would be tooooo far!! Closer in the centre of North West, loads of people from this area would be up for travelling, and I can get the local biker club interested, if needs be.....hows about near a campsite...and then travelling for festival fans wouldn't be so much of an issue,

Nowhere is gonna be ideal for everyone but realstically Manchester has to be the most central for the majority of people?
Darwen for me is 49.7 miles? and I'm by no means the furthest out from there?
Manchester is 29 miles from me which seems more reasonable to me!

Hi Jaymz, Kirk here, i think an indoor venue with a big room would be ace, and keep costs down a lot too, maybe the venues are busy serving pints as we speak and not using their computer at work during the day(hence no comments from venues yet ) ha ha

Lets face it guys wherever this takes place its likely some will travel further than others. Me I'm up in Fleetwood, so realistically EVERWHERE is quite a distance to travel.

Truth is if the cause is worthy (and it is) and the venue is good (no reason to think otherwise) and the music is going to be awesome (you know it will be), then distance becomes a minor issue.

I don't drive anymore (a long and very boring story) but will get to gigs wherever they are.

Someone do one of those map things where you stick a pin in where you live and work out the most central place for everyone :)

As people have said we are all over the North west, so location shouldn't be an issue, someone somewhere i will have to travel.

Indoor could be easier to arrange, but would perhaps limit the attendance and attraction. I would suggest if we go for it we go for an outdoor venue and look into it properly. Lots of obsticles, but people do it all the time. Must have a huge amount of experience and help through this site available

why not just have 3 or 4 on same day? eg Blackburn and the north organise one, Liverpool, Manchester, Bolton/Wigan or wherever...organised by people who live round there. There are a lot of bands on here, but not many are super active...and I can't see a band who aint that supportive travelling say from Manchester to Fleetwood just to watch. The main active ones are probably only about two dozen if truth be told...us, Dyehouse,Kerbcrawlers,Big Fish,Steelfield,Mothers Ruin,Fix,Anthem,Uncle Rotter,Kicks, Cans Pleasers,Riff Raff, 45's, Wolfpack,Ice Band, Blues & Beyond, Papa Legba, Bucket Bangers, Sabre,...thats the 17 i just remember from top of my head...apologies to the others...so maybe three dozen then all told
Surely that 3 dozen, who wouldn't all get on at a one dayer could organise a 'local' to them do, using the NWB 'banner' and with local knowledge with, say half a dozen or so bands on at local venues...

Time maybe to start getting our heads together. If we want it to really happen then lets sort out the most attractive sites/venues and their availability. Once thats done we can get this monster into gear and getting it on the road.

Wow don't log in until the afernoon and look what you miss!!! We're really chuffed to have been mentioned as a venue (thanks Paul!)

We've been offering Paul our services for a band day to raise some funds for him ever since I found out he was the creator of the site back in his Happy Felix days and told me about what it costs him just to run the site before you take into account the hours it takes up.

We always provide a full P.A. and sound engineer when we put on these sorts of events and would be happy to do so for NWBFest!! Plus we have a fully fitted catering kitchen and would be able to do food, the profits of which my Mum usually donates when it's a charity do but I'm she'd no doubt do the same in this instance too.

As we're trying to raise funds to help pay for the site would there be a door charge?? I think at the very least you could charge a pound?!!

What about the Pheasant Pluckers again?? - They have 2 main stages, and inhouse PA/Drum kit, backline?

just got home from work and seen this, hells bells, its all going on here, the phesant pluckers has the lower funtion room opening out into a large car park, the venue is far enough from other residents so noise polution would be a small risk. plus using the lower room would not upset the day to day activitys of the hotel, and there is food too, but it needs to be run past dave the owner as a posible venue first, put in on the list of possible venues i would say,

I would make it clear to users of the site that this is a NWB event to support the site but that you intend to make a donation to a charity on the day.

I run the Transport Festival as just that, a festival (no mention of charities) but we do hand over a decent % to local good causes RNLI and NW Air Ambulance.

I know I can get good coverage on BBC Lancashire as I have been working closely with Ben,Garry and the gang there with the other event

just out of interest if we are going down a charity route then i would like to suggest the nicu intensive care unit for babies @ burnley. purely selfish reasons really but they looked after my newborn baby at the end of last year when he caught pneumonia during labour. the care they provided was second to none. like i said its only a suggestion but i though if we were going down that route id throw it in the hat.

right radiator sorted, funny they somhow deside to start leaking all by themself, erm, stop banging the feeking pipes with the hoover, duhhhh. where was we now, bring it on, there will have to be a meeting at some point at the chosen venue to plan the logistics.

ohh will charge the wife 45 quid plus vat, that repair cost me six minutes of my time. lol, yeah i know, blogjack sorry, back to buisness.

Before you pick your dream team you should find out who has what area of expertise. No use having 4 people with the venue contacts and no-one with the tech know how, or oransiational skills and impartiality for band slots.

Only a suggestion...you don't want to make it difficult for yourselves.

I think Keef said he does the paperwork side etc so he's a must. What does everyone else have to offer to be considered?

Maybe Mr & Mrs NWB should assemble the team for those who can offer something. Put you name up for consideration and what you can do to make the event a success.

On a more regular basis, I'm free weeknights apart from Tuesdays, which is when we put the magic into the Whatever experience.

As a project manager/marketer I'd like to think that I could bring some organisation, resource management and budgeting skills to the team as well as PR, promotion, and liaison with local press and local stakeholders. I also have experience of organising similar (successful) events and dealing with local authorities.

Oh yeah, and I play the drums.

Hear what your saying about doers, I started out this years transport fest with 40 but as soon as it came to real commitment (time effort etc) it was left to just 3 of us. With you on Ayerpal and photogs. Gary Scott, )Frankie(Martyn) from The Kicks big brother) works as a presenter at BBC Lancashire and is a pal so no doubt we can talk coverage on the wireless. I think it's fantastic how many people are up for pitching in and I wouldn't be too worried about people dropping out because as long as you have the venue, gear and bands organised everything else like websites, signage, radio airplay etc. is a bonus.

Obviously it'd be better to have all those extras but what I'm saying is that the main concept of putting on a show doesn't have to be overly difficult!!

I mean we all want to put on a really impressive festival to showcase NWB but we also want to make a bit of cash for Paul and as long as we have bands singing through gear that works to a good crowd with lots of beer flowing then we've put on a good festival.

I think it'd be top if there was a proper NWB outdoor festival but it's MASSIVE amount of work and then you really are going to be relying on a lot of people to do what they've offered and how do you make money for the site from it because it'll cost more to put on??

Having said that though, Night Train posted at 12:28 that they knew a guy with experience of this type of event and the land to use for it which would be miles easier than using some public land, but nobody really picked up on it and I think if you're looking to put on a genuine outside event not some pub car park one, then that's the best idea put forward by miles!!

The biggest hurdle with an outdoor event is the weather. The second biggest hurdle is power. Trust me, its better off indoors!

Great idea Scott and if you can pull it oof it will be amazing BUT....
We're still waiting for NWB Showcase 2 - might this be a case of trying to run before we can walk?

whatever you want on the venue look see. been busy tonight back now, pm me over the weekend to arrange the hit on venues.

a showcase two can be put together easy in comparison but it would be a very good meeting to talk about this venture, so lets do one as a run up to the mega festival, as always i will set up the drum kit so no probs there, and all you drummers out there its not a fiddling little kit, plenty of stuff to hit but please dont tell me there are any left pegger drummers out there.

will pm you guys over the week end re site visit. Marigolds looks to be best first option and sounds like they are up for providing not only the venue but most of the infrastructure. This in essence would make the planing so much simpler. The organising element should be a walk in the park. Sorting out the running on the day will be a whole different ball game tho. So long as the organisers, bands and venue all work as a team this is so very do-able.

Agreed on the outdoor, it is attractive, but there are a lot of variables to consider.
My event is outdoor and it really does take a full 12 months to organise and can all be washed out in a few hours if the weather breaks.

Showcase two, sounds great idea. Worthy of further thought and discussion.

As mentioned we'd be keen to play. I work in marketing for the 'day job' and have access to a couple of large PR agencies in Manchester, so Keef if you need any help on this front give me a shout and I'll put the feelers out. Sure we could blag their services for free given the charity angle...

Cheers Rich, The more we promote this event and the wider the potential audience base the better.

You could always collaborate with the local authorities around the country and come up with something like HaighFest in Wigan. Cos if their arts and leisure sections are up for it, then they will front a lot of the costs as long as they're involved in some way, shape or form

i reckon accy oak hill park, the stage has just been re-built and since they changed it to the mela (or whatever) it has been crap, but its a great venue for a fest. i'll see what it takes for it to become available. but yeah, great idea, we would love to be part of it

Looks like we're a tad late but we'd be up for this too, just to add a little Punk to the event.

Soundhouse in Bolton is a good size venue with in house PA and lighting. Holds about 500 Also it is 200yds from motorway exit (well A666), and about 500yds from train / Bus station. Lack of beer garden is a drawback though. Local rock pub The Alma is just 2 mins up the road. Too small for this gig but good place to escape to for a chill.

Dont 4get that 2010 is world cup year,,,,chances of England makin up to the final are slim but mite be worth thinkin about with a view to the date.World cup runs from 11th june to 11th july.

I can confirm that Marigolds would be a good venue to get the first one going.
We have played a couple of festivals there and they have always ran smooth.

Indoors would definately be a lot easier to organise too as has been said less costs etc.

We would have a play at this too if slots were available.

Just finished negotiating a deal to organise a major fest next year in Fleetwood (175th Anniversary bash). Oh Yeah it could well be a 'Stadium' venue. Reckon fellow NWB bands will feature on the bill.
Nows where the NWB Team?

lots of ideas and sugestions for venues, clashes with football matches need to be observed, the big lads kicking a ball around can screw up a good hard fought for and organized event with the blowing of one whistle.
so lets look at the fixtures of matches to avoid disapointment, not knowing a thing about footy, somone else will have to highlight the danger dates.

Almost any date between June 11 and July 11 is gonna be a bugger I reckon Pete. Even if England progress, there are still loads of folks that will follow the matches right through to the Spain V Holland Final. Oooops Mystic Meg told me to keep that under me hat lol.

Marigolds looks to be the fave chioce for venue, what say you?

The ACE Centre in Nelson may be an idea. 3 performance areas inside the same building.

There is a great open air venue in liverpool you can hire out for cheap, it's cool, in the city centre and we'd be interested in playing x

We have a venue in blackburn town centre that has a history of putting on festivals during the summer. We have 3 arena, The warehouse which has a full size stage and profession pa system used to putting on local bands and large touring bands, with 2 bars and a capacity of over 350 people. The courtyard with a main stage and a smaller side stage, this has a bottle bar and a burger bar with capacity for around 400 people. And the celler bar with a small pub style stage , this has 1 bar and a capacity for 250 people.

It is centrally located in blackburn, which can be reached from preston, blackpool, bolton, manchester, burnley etc via direct train routes.

We have inhouse sound and lighting tech's as well as video and recording studios on site. See the below link for youtube footage.

Venue - Horwich RMI club, errr in Horwich, a few miles out of Bolton maybe a good venue, they been having events on for years. They got a good large stage, main room holds about 270 people, good car park. I reckon the room would be free - oh, did I mention the booze was quite cheap! If any use - 01204 468395 ask for Vinny

What venue..I'm sure any or all of James bands would support it...sounds great.

How about Clitheroe Castle in the beautiful Ribble Valley...they have brass bands play there on the ampitheatre, large recreation area to the side, stand directs sound towards the mound and castle, so would to some extent control noise to surrounding neighbours and its just by the town centre so would bring welcome trade into the place and a couple of watering holes just over the road. A place with a Bandstand would minimize amount of scaffold to maybe cover-all but no need for structural flooring. Not sure off memory how much area there is in front of the stand though.

A bandstand in a large open park might be a better option, or what about an amateur football ground? Would need to get sorted within the close season tho.

Billy at The Bridge Inn Burscough might be worth a shout. He can put on a big outdoor stage and pa outside his pub.plenty of parking available as its next to car park.Also its rite next to train station,(burscough Bridge) so great for fans of bands who want to drink,and musos of course ;-)
Im pretty friendly with Billy i can have a word if help is needed here.As to wether this is a "central location" i dont know,Unless your local at thousands attending i personally think this venue might be worth a shout..Ah well ,that my two penneth lol

A weekend NWB event, all bands play for free all proceeds ( after costs ) go to charity's.... I think it would be a fantastic weekend !
