How do you set your Tuning and Intonation?

I have my way of doing it what method do others on here use?

Whenever I have had work done on my axe's they have always come back unsatisfactorily set up?
The Tuning and intonation is set up by luthiers using the harmonics at the 12th fret?
This method isn't good enough for me as I find the upper tuning not correct?
When I do it myself I always depress the strings at the 12th fret onto the fret becauase when you play that high up you dont play just harmonics do you?
you play on the frets which stretches the string slightly so I find if it's been set up with harmonics the tuning is never quite perfect!
Anybody got any tricks of the trade?

...basturd innit !!!.go on then ....
the higher up the neck you go the string gets shorter and then becomes more susceptible to even the tiniest amount of pressure will make it sound out as you don as much to make the next tone you want ..also the lighter the string the more trouble you will have ....personally i dont let it bother me too much ...damn i forgot to change my strings for tonites gig ......bugger i'll do it monday !!!

Wonderous things?
I'm really looking for a way around having another refret on my main guitar[the one I use for giging] it's only been about 12 months since I last had it done and apart from the hassle and expence it comes back with the intonation not right and set for pitch even though I tell him I dont play in effin pitch he insists that's the way to do it?

the whole point of setting the intonation is that the string is bent when fretted, so fret it and use a tuner. check all the e's all over just to double check.

12th fret harmonic is fine for me. I'm a really light player though.

I'm with De Mortiuis on that!
But why do the so called experts do it differant even when you ask them not to?

Can answer that Gordon ...... its because they dont listen to what we tell em when we hand it in for a set up !!!, thats why I started doing my own set ups nearly 30 years ago .... bloody hell, did I just say that ???, must be getting old !!!!, but seriously, whenever I do a set up for someone I always tell them if its not how they like it .. bring it back and it gets "tweaked" for free as part of the service ... maybe the "experts" should adopt this approach .....

They probably would if I took it back and insisted but it's the guitar I gig with so always in a hurry to get it back after a refret and reluctant to hand it back to them again so end up doing it myself
but it's so bloody irritating!

He's breaking us in gently E.
Though he made us do "Still of the night last" night cause he's got a bit of trickery he does in the quirt bit!
I'll have to start taping his fingers up to keep him under control!
