5th Element review from the Wheatsheaf

Or how to make a very good band even better.....

My wife and I always like to catch 5th element when they are local. They're a good, tight outfit and Ann has a great voice and is great at pulling the punters onside. So no surprises there. Consistently good music and entertainment as usual. Wouldn't expect anything less. :o)

The main thing I'd like to comment on was the HUGE improvement in the sound quality. These guys have invested some money in bass bins, monitors etc, and are now putting backline through the FOH mix. It makes one hell of a difference, and it came across in the performance. Friday night was the best I've ever seen/heard them. It's always a pleasure to see a band AND hear them well.

No volume creep between the guitarists, which is always nice. Bass player not attempting to move the pub 10 paces east with his sub, and the drums actually had a great mix, whereas when they were solely using the PA tops, the drum triggers tended to drive the cabs a little too hard and overwhelm the vocals a touch.

Final icing on the cake will be when they get the vocal to project a little more. It was loud enough, but a little bottom heavy for my taste.

All in all a top night with a top band. :o)

I absolutely agree with the comments above. Top night from a top band, with beer as well.

Thanks for the great review, Mick! :-) Really pleased all the new gear is making the difference - it wasn't cheap or easy to do but we really feel like it's paying off, although that's really all thanks to our lead guitarist, Neil H, who has worked really hard to learn how to best set up the mixes on the new gear - he'll be a fully qualified sound engineer before we know it! :-)

Rick, please don't encourage Richard!! He is loud enough, honest! (He claims he can never hear his bass but we all can - and from a considerable distance away!) :-) Innuendo, please note Mick's comment - 'Bass player not attempting to move the pub 10 paces east with his sub'!!!

Anyway, Mick says it's me that needs to be turned up a little bit, so there! Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! ;-)

Thanks very much for that constructive review Mick and for the comments above, very much appreciated, and i'm sure we will take on board the points made, especially yours Rick! ha! Ya hear that Neil?!!!

Very much enjoyed the night with such great company.
Must take my hat off to our Hughsey for getting this new gear together, he spent a lot of time researching stuff and frankly I still don't have a bloody clue how it works! It's pleasing to know that it is making a difference. It was great to have people in the audience who know what they are about, to give us their opinion.

Thanks again, and hope to catch up with you all soon.

b*gger see Ann beat me to it! get back to work !

I bloody love this community. Where else can you get such constructive feedback. Fans are biased and the competition just want to put you down.

I would welcome any NWBers down to a Whatever! gig for a full and frank review.

Big thanks to Roj from Twin Lizzy, too for his comments, both on here and on the night - especially loved it when you told Neil to turn me up! Bwahahaha! Oh dear, does that count as a massaged ego?! ;-) Ann x

yep totally agree with all of the above comments, but Richard's bobbing head made up for any lack of "doh doh doh" on the bass :-) Seriously though, I thought the bass level was fine, and thought the overall sound was excellent
For me, the enthusiasm of each member of the band was as joyful to watch as listening to the music.
If you guys are really enjoying it, then it's bound to draw in the audience.

sorry I had to shoot off early but will catch up with you guys again soon.

Scott

I have one strange thought though, how the hell did our drummer get a hold of the drunken pic of me and mick pulling silling faces?
I got an email on sat morning saying "James Hetfield lookalike spotted in Coppull"

LMAO

I happen to be rather proud of my, ahem, well-rounded bottom so I will take your comments as a compliment! :-)

Anyway, you can't comment 'cos you missed us on Friday.... Sniff sniff...

Cheers, Scott - you'll have to change your avatar on here so we can all see this photo! And I don't think Mick was pulling any silly faces that night - isn't that just his normal one? :-P

Hope to see you again soon!
