Van Insurance

Just looking into how much it would cost if we were to buy a band van

Got some stupid quotes of £800 a year for 3rd party only cover on some old clapped out vans worth £500 with only doing about 3000-4000 miles a year tops.

Just gonna be using it for getting to and from gigs.

Was wondering what anyone else pays?

first of all, whatever you do, don't ever say you're a musician or have anything whatsoever to do with the entertaiment business :o)
I pay just under £500 a year, 3rd party, but with 'any other driver over 25'...which is useful.
Rip off all round if youask me...should be able to pay just for say a days insurance when you need it...come to think of it, I think I heard of a scheme like that, anybody else?

that's what I was thinking Alec, considering the amount of time it's actually gonna get used, it is a complete rip off.

I heard mumblings about pays as you go insurance but whether it is actually avail for vans I don't know. Will give you a shout if I find anything.

@ Mick, no I don't have Don's number.

Might look into getting an old people carrier instead and see if the insurance is cheaper that way.

yeh, thinking about it though it works out at around £9 a week, so if I use it for gigs say minimum 3 a fortnight...its only really £6 a gig, so I dont think a pay as you go scheme would be significantly cheaper...what is galling is the first part of what I said...ie musicians insurance rates....its astronomical if you actually go legit...and some companies wont touch it at all

MPV and trailer might do it. If you haven't got an Artics worth of gear. lol

you guys should think yourselves lucky. my first years quote when i started driving was 5200.00 sterling! bastards

tried the pay as you go option, but it's only a month at a time and they want £123 a month....WTF
Bending over with pants down as we speak :-D

So, if we're looking at £800 for the van, £800 for the insurance, not to mention, Road Tax, MOT and any other costs, would it be worth it?

But being able to just chuck everything in the one van and allow us to take turns in driving is very tempting.

One thing to consider is distance and logistics. Unless you store your gear somewhere central, and all meet at that point (like we do) The van driver is going to have one hell of a trek around before and after the gig. Your lads are scattered all over the NW aren't they?

yep it would be a good hours trip just to collect all the gear, but if it's on a 3 week rota it won't be so bad.

Probably work out cheaper if one of you has a van/MPV as their everyday vehicle, that's what most bands round here do.

I'm lucky in that I have a large rear garden which is very very secure, so its great being able to leave everything in the van...saves bringing it in, storage spave etc

Mick, stop talking nonsense, no-one in their right mind would exchange their valuable plank of wood for a Kia lol

Hey, that car is awesome, 80,000 miles on one oil change...rock on
At it's last (only) service, they said, when's the last time the oil was changed......I just said, I'm an IT geek not a car mechanic.

I'm modeling it on Chuggaboom

My Berlingo van ins. costs £270 - I get all the P A in this.

The large Merc van ins. is £435 and thats with another named driver.

We insure both vans with Direct Choice which is underwritten with Red Star.

Rick.

Re-Jeff's lights - approx 10% of gig money

I've said it before and i'll say it again - 15 seater minibus - throw out (or store somewhere) 7 seats - making it an 8 seater bus with loads of space for gear.
ours is P reg - bought for £1800 - insured TPFT for 300 and pennies a year (this is just with one driver tho - the others can drive on their own insurance)
however - should we ever have to claim for ourselves, we probably won't as we'd probably find we're not covered cos we're a band.
So basically we're paying 300 a year to obtain an insurance cert to show the bizzies and the tax disc man.

Rob, just don't take any wages from your gigs for a few weeks ... soon mounts up!!
Failing that I'll stump up the £450 but you've got to promise not to get me done as a superloanshark!!
D'ya think 450 percent APR, AER, BBC + VAT sounds fair??
