most underrated bands

bands you like that should be bigger than they are/were, hopefully will be soon

heres some i love

Skid Row(with Sebastian Bach an amazing vocalist, heavy hair rock i like to describe them as, 2nd album slave to the grind is amazing!!)

Black Stone Cherry just buy their 2 albums and youll thank me!!

Tyketto, (amazing singer Danny Vaughan, super melodic feel good rock anthems)

Alice In Chains, thankfully back, but Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrells vocal harmonies, amazing

Thunder (very lauded and well known, but they have never ever had the full credit they deserve, Danny Bowes is a wonderful singer)

White Lion (excellent band, Mike Tramp had many girls hearts fluttering, cool band and great songs, their cove rof radar love kicks ass)

Living Colour (80s, 90'sNew York funk/rock/metal band simply awesome)

Jet (superb australian band really great songs all three albums are equally great at least buy the first album Get Born)

The Answer(still up and coming but many rock fans know these, followed em from day one, when they started out supporting bigger bands about 4 years ago)

Skin(early 90s rock band, many many superb songs, just reformed)

White Lies(on the way up big time, love this band first album is superb)

who do you think should be more lauded than they are/were?

Rob

The mighty DT of course, although some would argue are not underrated. Don't suppose they are in the rock world but they are still pretty much comercially unknown.

Pride and Glory - Zakk Wyldes side project. proper Deep South rock/blues stuff! Funky!

h'mm- let's see-
groundhog-totally awesome-never got the full recognition they deserved? tony mcphee - briliant muso, if a little off the planet sometimes? :-0
rory gallagher and "taste"-outstanding heavy blues rock-was a masterclass with every tune?
mountain-pappalardi showed why he produced such outstanding albums for cream-he could talk the talk and play the play. :-)

I can only agree on Skin with you there mate, very underrated. White Lies have done very well this year however and been one of the top sellers, so hardly underrated, but plenty of strong tunes nonetheless. Living Color - another great group.
However, Jet and The Answer - oh dear! Tee hee..
Anyway, here's some of mine: -

Exit Calm: - http://www.myspace.com/exitcalmusafansite (listen to Reference and Higher Learning, wonderful guitar work). Easily the best band in the world that still aren't signed.

Dredg: -

- U.S. prog band with shades of Radiohead. Incredibly powerful.

The XX: - http://www.myspace.com/thexx - The only band to successfuly create an atmosphere using minimalism and space, brilliant.

Funkadelic: -
- always overlooked in favour of Hendrix, but I've never heard a more complete and tasteful guitar solo than Maggot Brain.

Peter, Bjorn & John: -
- currently having their best tune slaughtered by a B&Q add, but write the most uplifting pop tunes.

Education complete! Oh yeah, and listen to more Coldplay!

Only got to see them once in 75. Pete Boot sent me a couple of tickets, thought what the hell and went along. WOW did they kick ass or what? Went out the next day and bought the Bandolier album. Have them all now played very frequently. Grip of a tyre fitters hand, pure classic

Totally agree with Skin, Styx, Little Angels, Thunder. How about It Bites? Massively underrated prog rock band. Forget Calling All The Heroes, listen to their other stuff.
Anyone remember Riot?

Rennaissance, Highly underated Rick. Still play Carpet of the sun occasionally.

What would I give you get a band together to recreate some of these 70s masterpieces. Not sure how the average pub punter would react.

Good list Rob, we do Skid Row, 2 x Alice In Chains and Jet. Some of the club bands do songs by Tyketto, just don't see many pub bands playing em.
A lot of the other bands that you guys have mentioned still get discussed fondly by musicians, even if they were never HUGE.

I don't really understand the "underrated" thing.

I can understand if a band are under-exposed and struggle to get a following, and I can DEFINITELY understand OVERRATED (White Stripes. Case in Point.)

Sometimes I think we put our own wishes for a band onto the marketability and appeal they have for the wider audience. Sometimes they just aren't what a broad market want. Thunder were going YEARS and never really hit Bon Jovi status. I don't think that it's an under-exposure thing. As exellent as they were, they just weren't what the broad market wanted.

In the late 80s I heard a swedish band called the Electric Boys. I thought back then that they should have been huge. Never happened. I know why though. They had the industry vehicle but not the mass ear appeal.

Just an opinion. :o)

Yep, I remember the Electric Boys and from the same era, D*A*D and Vain. All quite good but none made it big really.

I got the D*A*D album again recently after a long hunt. There were about 3 really good songs on that. Vain. Good lord. I saw them supporting Skid Row at the Apollo. Man that was a long time ago. lol!

HELL IS FOR HEROES. A cracking English band who had radio 1 airplay a, a vid and made it big when they first appeared. Then the radio 1 donkeys got bored and nobody played them anymore. Well shame on you, they released 2 more albums which were their best yet. Unfortunately taking a break after 7 years of touring. Saw them several times myself. Absolutely stonking! Check out their stuff if you get a chance especially Tranmit Disrupt
