Are tribute bands a good or bad thing?

With a nod to a certain recent blog, I was wondering where us NWBers stand on the whole tribute band issue.

I know that a certain reptilian female on here thinks that all cover bands are 'wanna be's', so presumably then, tribute would be the worst of the lot, not only copying the music, but usually the whole look aswell.

On the other hand, Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull says that tribs are the highest form of compliment - the fact that someone likes your work so much they want to copy it and play it to other people, rather than writing their own.

Personally, I think good tribs are great for everyone concerned: the fans get to hear the music they like live on a much more regular basis than would otherwise be possible (in some case, the ONLY way possible - Led Zepp etc etc), the original band gets free advertising and possibly it's music carried to a new and wider fan base, and the band doing the trib gets to play the music they love live! Win, win, win.

If there were no tribute bands, loads of great music would cease to be played live, and surely, that would be a real shame. After all, Beethoven, Brahms and co died long ago, but that doesn't stop their music being played and even reinterpreted.

So, discuss the above in no more than 500 words, and have it on my desk for Friday - and no excuses!

if tribute bands recreate the sound of there chosen idols, then how good would a covers band be if they changed the sound of every song they did to reacreate the whatever or whoever they where doing on every song, or is that asking a bit to much

everybody should do as they please, any band is a good thing, and if anybody is negative about another band, they can get stuffed and not bother listening ha ha :-)

Tributes keep the record sales going of the origional bands so from that point it's a good thing,

Rick.

TRIBUTE bands are fine if the person/band is dead and gone - Jimi, Rory, StevieRay, Thin Lizzy, LedZep et al are all fine and dandy. It's great that the music of past masters is being kept alive, as with Beethoven, Bach etc.
Please Sweet Jesus, why do people want to do Coldplay, Nickleback, and other existing acts that will be forgotten in five years - please be real. Jimi and Rory's music is nearly 50 years old, and it's still fresh today.
Keep TRIBUTES to people who deserve it please, or it aint a tribute.

I think tributes are a good thing, well I would wouldn't I, but ...exactly whats been said above, plus where else am I gonna wear spandex and silver glitter boots, girlfriend won't let me have em on round the house any more, keeps wandering off muttering "thats just f*ckin wierd" lol
but on a serious note, if they are done well they are great, otherwise why would there be so much call for them.
none of us sadly are going to get the chance to see T-rex, sweet , the glitter band or gary glitter ( I know the last ones a bit dodgy but hey, mention glamrock and thats the name that comes up), then you have thin lizzy, pink floyd, the who,the sex pistols ,hendrix, the beatles and the list goes on and on.
I don't think theres anything wrong with modern tributes also re: viva la coldplay , its a preference after all and if thats yours then go for it, if people don't like it they won't come to watch so I suppose a gig list will speak volumes for how popular a tribute act is.

Tributes are the dogs danglies imo....provided they are as 'accurate' as possible.
That's not to take anything away from the covers bands though...they are brill too....but my preference if for the former.

A tribute act is what it is...a tribute...not a clone which a majority of people now seem to think it is.
It's how you choose to make your tribute to your fav artist that's important.

If you were asked to go on stage and make a speech in tribute to Michael Jackson or whoever, you're not gonna walk on dressed like him and make the speech sounding like him are you? (well some people might but you'd get the p!ss ripped out of you lol)

I do the Metalleeka thing because it's the closest thing I can do to recreate the joy of jumping about my bedroom aged 12 with an old broken bass guitar that I got at the scout jumble sale with the likes of Sanitarium and Puppets blasting out on the stereo etc.

Do I look like James Hetfield...a little
Do I sound like him...no...and never will, but all I can do is go on stage and just enjoy what I'm doing. That is my tribute to Metallica.

If someone criticises me for not growling here, or James doesn't do that, then that's their problem not mine.

Plus, how many fat, left handed Scottish James Hetfields are you gonna see in your lifetime? :-D

A good thing

There done my homework for the weekend can I go out to play now?

To be honest the quote we keep getting at gigs is along the lines of "thanks for keeping this music live as Genesis are not playing anymore"

That for me makes what we tribs do worthwhile and valid. I would love to see Viva La Coldplay btw as the chance of me getting to see the real thing are very slim

Best wishes

John

As I said on a previous thread, tribs are not really my thing. I would personally rather watch or listen to the original esecially when some of the tribute bands (or venues) are charging over £10 entrance fee. When Ian Anderson says that "tribs are the highest form of compliment", he is right.....if you happen to be a songwriter in Jethro Tull!

After saying all that (and coming over as someone who's just throwing a spanner in the works), I do believe that tribs offer a healthy option and have become incredibly popular in the UK. I am all in favour of more choice regarding live music and I have seen some very entertaining tribs in the past (ACDO and a Hawkwind trib who's name I can't remember). In fact without tribute bands a lot of musicians could not generate enough income to be professional.
