being proud of what you do

self praising good or bad?............

theres definitely a fine line between sounding off about how good you are and commenting on a great gig youve had and praising your colleagues in the band

there seems to be some controversy on here sometimes about people saying what a great gig they had, i just see it as promoting yourself?....... i can see both sides to it, but i really dont think self worship appears on here hardly at all

a lot of us know were not big rock stars whats wrong with having some fun with it along the way ?..........

whats the point in doing this if you dont promote yourselves and big up your band, if youre not enthusiastic how will the audience be?.............

i for one will always be hugely enthusiastic and proud and promote whatever band im in and congratulate my colleagues , theres room for all of us out there, we have a common bond in our love of music so lets celebrate that and not encourage that rather unfortunate trait of bringing down peoples enthusiasm and love of what they do

just my thoughts guys and gals

Rob :-)

In any band I've been in previously, I've always been obsessed with what others think.
Do the crowd like us?
Does the landlord/lady like us or do they feel they are having to shell out for a crap band?
Are the musos in the crowd watching my every move and noting every single mistake?

Now, I'm concentrating on two things, having fun and entertaining.
If I make a tit of myself, then fine.
If I cock up really badly and people think I'm sh!t, then so be it. I am having such a blast with the guys and for the first time enjoying every single song we're playing. (apart from nothing else matters obviously lol). You can't ask for anymore than that.

This should be fun, and is fun and I feckin love it

LOL

Do I feel proud that Face Value bring a lot of pleasure to Genesis and Phil Collins fans?

Do I feel proud that we have been doing this for over ten years now?

Do I feel proud that we have played over 400 gigs in that time?

Do I feel proud that this weekend we are playing to well over 300 people who have paid £20 each to see us?

Bloody right I do and we all should feel proud that we bring a little joy and fun into this world whatever our chosen brand of music is

Best wishes

John

Bring it on. Many of you put on a show that's at least semi-pro in standard, and do it for money that barely covers costs for the evening, never mind the investment in kit. Be rightly proud of what you do!
(It can get difficult when a 3rd party reviewer 'bigs up' their fave bands but that's a discussion for another day)

theres a difference between enjoying what you do and being proud of your band to just coming on here every week and putting the same blog about how much "you rocked!"
im pretty sure that most of the people on here are in a band for exactly the same reason as me, thats to go out, have a good time, entertain some poeple and play the tunes that you love.
what bugs me is when i log on here first thing on a monday and you see about 10 blogs all saying pretty much the same thing. anyways im not going down this road again!

Ben you really have to stop being so negative dude :-D

Robs comment of "so lets celebrate that and not encourage that rather unfortunate trait of bringing down peoples enthusiasm and love of what they do" is bang on the money.

I don't like confrontation, I have the mental age of a 3 year old and believe that everyone should be stupidly funny all of the time and just enjoy life and have fun. (yes I can be a pessimistic paranoid moaning git at times but I try to keep that to a minimum lol)

Rock On

and if people big up their pals in other bands personally i think thats ok too, all part of the great rapport that we support each other and appreciate each others work and love of music and even if its not to our own tastes

a good friend of mine on here told me he hates Metallica and wouldnt be coming but wishes us all the best with it and hope it goes well

that ladies and gents is the benchmark id like to see on here

but hey this is a democracy hopefully and we all have opinions, theres no right or wrong

music is art, theres no good or bad

but please just live and let live and let others do what makes them happy, if somecome comes on here and they are boasting then who cares its their choice n'est pas??????

(i will be accused of being pretentious now for adding French in there....)

We should be proud of what we do, why do it otherwise. As a working band we put a massive amount of effort into everything we do, the travelling, the setting up, the show it's self and then the breaking down and travelling home. If one person comes up to me and say's they enjoyed it that's all that matters. And yes, I am proud.

I'm tryin to be a better man, as they say... when I was young and arrogant, I was young and arrogant, and my attitude was that if you're not at least 95% as good as the musician whose tunes you're playing, then you shouldn't be up there... if you couldn't replace Jimmy Page or John Entwistle or whoever's part you're playing, and do a good enough job to carry off a professional gig 'in the shoes of...', then you should get off the stage and stay in your bedroom

now I see that this is supposed to be about pleasure, and you CAN be an amateur, and even be a bit mediocre, and still get up and do your stuff, express yourself regardless of your limitations... rock n roll is about expression more than it's about virtuosity, and the young, arrogant me in the 1st paragraph hadn't yet learned that

you've got a right to do it, enjoy it, promote yourself and not apologise for doing it... it's just when people appear to be completely deluding themselves about their own abilities, maybe a gentle reality check can be beneficial (or maybe not)... it's fine to be an amateur, both in ability and income :)

but re: bigging yourself up... I think 'show' is better then 'tell', and even if you think you're great, you should be looking for opportunities to SHOW people that, talk's cheap innit...

I think a post-gig bunch of pics, mp3's or videos tell more than an 'it wuz rockin, brill night' self-review... we (Teh Fix) try to put stuff up, and some of it's a bit cringeworthy, some of it's cool, but it is what it is, and it doesn't need us to make anything out if it that it's not...

so to answer the original poster, I'm proud of my musicianship, but would prefer it to be heard than read about

Iv'e been on this site for a while now and during that time I have met a quite few of the bands (yet to meet up with many more) and what comes through every time is the enthusiasm they have for playing,Its not about stardom, being the next big discovery or even competeing with other bands, or making loads of money (usually the reverse.
Its about taking their love of music, and getting out there week in week out, having a good time and keeping the sound and spirit of live music alive
If they, their supporters or the venues want to 'big the band up' its fine by me.
Be proud of what you do guys, have fun and keep on giving the punters a good nights entertainment.

I for one enjoy and look forward to the monday morning blogs.Sometimes informative, sometimes OTT but always always a good read.
LOUD, PROUD AND LIVE, thats what we want to hear !!!

think youve misunderstood me there a bit scott. i really wasnt trying to slate anybody or be on a downer!

one good honest, constructive review (be it good or bad) is worth 100 self written, self hyping and self deluding blog. to me it is anyway!

as steve said

"I'm proud of my musicianship, but would prefer it to be heard than read about"

I think the proudest guy this weekend is Dean from the Sugar Bullets.

His band have obviously put on a good show to a well attended, appriciative crowd - surley that's what we all want. The money and the dreaded pack up don't even enter your head when you've had a great gig.

Life is too short and as Rob said - Live and let Live.

Enjoy,

Rick.

i am very very proud to play with not only very talented musicians but really nice blokes too, im proud to call the guys in hare of the dog and metalleeka friends as well as band colleagues, and if people enjoy it along the way that makes the whole thing worthwhile,

lest we forget all these mega huge famous bands got where they are by huge self belief and confidence, often arrogance as well, this is not always a modest profession , its not my profession im a weekend warrior but i treat it like i am being paid to be the best i can be and deliver what is promised, not saying i do always but if its something youve worked hard to do then theres nothing wrong with some swagger and delusion :-))))))))) its all fun and not changing the world, please people lets all calm down on here, its a shame this stuff seems to be growing on this site, i know its an open forum , every opinion is totally valid but its disappointing to see these arguments continuing, often escalated over nothing :-((((((((((

the more and more years i play , i find it increasingly funnier and funnier when i make a huge mistake in a song, i mean theres always those first few seconds of horror, but after that it can be really funny, shows the audience were human and not deluded wannabe rock stars..............

would i love to play guitar in a huge rock band ? , f**k yeah!!!!!

but im not.

when i play a gig do i sometimes think or dream in doing that, probably............

but im not.

am i well known as guitarist?...........

am i f**k

but id like to be

somtimes it doesnt harm to dream and delude yourself.

# Posted by Scott - Metalleeka - 19/10/2009, 14:10 (GMT)

yeah we've got 2 dates there, 1 in June and another next december.
To be honest, we've had to curb the gig getting lol
We're trying to do no more than 3 a month, but with 24 booked up for next year, we're not far off the max of 36.

So, we can afford to sit back and wait for venues to come to us now.
We just been given a gig at the the Rock House hotel in Eccles for the 4th Dec which adds even more pressure on us. We were looking at having the full 90min set ready for the 17th Jan gig at the Oddfellows, now we've gotta move that a month forward.
Bring it on lol

We're all doing someone elses songs but its down to what the punters want ...so you can be proud about the set list youve picked ...cos if yr not playing the right songs for them ,they wont come back .....and the thing is if you have a good responce and a few handshakes and good comments that makes you feel proud and worthwhile....... a great comment on frinite at RR gig this bloke comes up to me and says 'have you got a singer cos im looking for a fat bloke and i cant see him'

an unusual thing happened to us at the millenium biker gig at the weekend, we were handed oue fee before we even started to get on stage, that reflects the level of confidence they had in sabre, or they probley didnt want to walk around with the cash in thier pockets while gettin pissed.

well I personally think that getting up in front of an audience and entertaining them is probably the best job in the world and I feel very lucky and proud to be doing it. we all have good gigs and bad gigs but we are human and it is allowed...I play the same load of songs 3 or 4 times a week and STILL cock em up, lets em know its not the record that I'm miming to lol...well thats my excuse anyway..
stand up and be proud of what you do be it rock, punk, indie or indifferent it all takes bottle to get up there in the first place
