Good and Bad @ the Oddys!!

Sign of the times or just one of them nights?

We did the Oddfellows on Sunday night which is normally a great Sunday gig straight from the kick off!
But not last night?
It was very quiet early on, or "like a bloody morgue in here" as someone said to us!
And then come about 10.15pm lifted up my head from a concentrated lead solo and bugger me it was like someone had waved a magic wand and an audiance had appeared out of knowhere??
We've had this before at other venues but not at the Oddy's!
So should we all start going on at 10.00pm?
I know a lot of the Landlords and ladys would dissagree as they consider us as "just the entertainment" and not as we see it as a mission to thrill!
We've had complaints for not starting earlier from venue's when there's only been 2/3 people there???
Perhaps in deperation for custom they think passers by will hear it and wander in??
Personally I think times are a changing due to the credit crunch and smoking ban and if people are only going out for the last hour, then thats the target market venues should fighting over and let us play to that market by starting later and finishing later!!

Steve from Nags Head Macc has and bands start 10pm or later depending on trade .....the downside is that you finish 1am and you get back home 2:30am/3am .......even at the Oddies and the cask last nite we normally play till midnite ....but the people in bands that have to be up for work then suffer ...not too bad for punters cos they normally are local .....but hey its too early to start moaning G ...more coffee

Yep we've noticed this too - usually start at 9.30 but seems 10pm is more fitting. I'm really happy we played to a packed pub on Sat, the last few weeks have been feckin dire, we could have started at any time and the pubs would still be dead.

Sugar Bullets!
Yeh but you did the Bakers Vaults?
That place is an exception to the rule cause it's got a great regular appreciative crowd in there!
We loved doing that one!
You could start at 8.00pm in there and finish at 10.00 [not that they'd let you??] ha ha!

Odd feel to the Oddies gig early on. There were a decent crowd in, but subdued. I got the feeling they were interested in a concert sort of way, listening and appreciative. As G said by 10ish the pace was filling up a bit and there was more of a join in and be part of the night feel about the place. Later start here? I reckon so.

The piccies came out half decent, but have yet to look at the vid mate.I only did the one number (Boys are back) as the Camcorder is shite at capturing with good sound quality when loud ( and yep you were agreeably loud)! I'll put the stuff on a disk for you to check out mate,
Should have recorded the Ralway gig instead, but the band and the music would have been incidentall haaa haaa.

mmm ive noticed a few times at gigs lately the ol'

"blimey where did that lot suddenly appear from"

people seem to be hitting the pubs that little bit later and the last few gigs HOTD have done, weve started a little later than we were expecting to get the desired effect(even though crowds often really dont warm up generally till the 2nd set, saying that its always a good sign its gonna be a great one if theyre going gaga after a few songs!!)

Ah the wonders of alchohol!
We even sound better to ourselve's after a refreshment!
maybe we should start putting it in there tea??
Then they'd be ready for us straight from the off? ha ha!

i quite often say

"hey the beers are kicking in?!!!"

if people suddenly start getting louder later on ha ha

i think maybe it is quite a good technique to let the audience get warmed up on the beers before the band starts, great for the pub as they spend more on beer hopefully, cos as brian potter says

"dancers are not drinkers"

and great for the band too as they get great response, win win

it is however bad for band to drink lots before a gig, as they wont be as good, unless youre Zakk Wylde who can play amazingly even when sunk loads

:-)

I would agree people do arrive later and are generally up for it by then.(a few beers down them)
If people are in early they are very rarely (as mentioned) ready for the first set at 9pm.
Problem is some of the venues have to stop the music at a certain time so your stuck goging on early and playing to no one or people who cant be bothered early on.

# Posted by DYEHOUSE - 19/10/2009, 13:44 (GMT)

That's true but we agree to 2x45 minute sets so thst still leaves 2hrs from a 10.00pm start and most places will risk letting you play untill about 12.30pm?

Avatar

# Posted by Whatever! - 19/10/2009, 13:52 (GMT)

Yes true too but we have been stopped twice by The Police at The Flaming Gallah at 11:30.

I didn't think we were that bad ;)

We do play later at other venues and will co-operate with the landlords if we need to go on even later.

# Posted by DYEHOUSE - 19/10/2009, 13:55 (GMT)

The last time we played there we only played the first set and took half the money due to a private party upstairs that were complaining we were to loud downstairs?
To much hassle that place??

Hi G ,think its just down to brass (or lack of it ) at the mo mate we have seen this recently to
Mind you
our 2 gigs over the weekend were both early jobs.

Fri nite at Rammy , Azz and his amazing timepiece had us on at 9.15 and off at 10 with an hour to kill for our last hour slot 11 - 12 ish, as Jill the landlady wants you on til 12 or later, so we were hangin around like spare pricks at an orgy lol.

Sat nite at the PRIVATE PARTY Roebuck, we were on at 9 off at6 9.45 and back on at 10 till 11, job done ,eat the buffet get paid and Fuck off home!
weird this gig malarky ehh ?

hey, Dakota, don't you think that it was quiet when you started? then people started coming in during the 1st set?
Maybe they heard you, and came in to watch. It wasn't a bad size crowd by the end of the 1st set in Rammy.

IMO it's down to the venue to decide start/finish times and volume levels. Most of them know their punters and neighbourhoods.

# Posted by DAKOTA - 19/10/2009, 19:19 (GMT)

Hi Steve , yes it was ,and they all just seem to arrive at once , even more so for the 2nd set Steve , but the pub was reasonably full by then , not packed but reasonable, but if the landlords and landlady are happy with the outcome and re book , as they did, then its a sign that we at least kept their punters in whatever the recession is doing.
But i do think times are gonna get even harder for the venues which also does meen us bands to unfortunately

# Posted by DYEHOUSE - 19/10/2009, 20:44 (GMT)

Yeh much the same as us except you get the odd venue wanting you to start at 9pm [but still play untill 12pm!]
We usually only break between sets for 10/15 minutes and then back to it cause it gets a bit boring hanging about waiting to go back on?
So when we start at 9pm were playing for nearly 3hrs!
