earache from the other half

about being in a band and out gigging

i have a very understanding girlfriend about gigging and playing often, she likes to come down to the gigs and support me, when its a place she likes which is very understandable

i think i get the balance just right between nights in/out as a couple when not playing and number of gigs per month, and i make sure we get that personal time together wherever we can

how does everybpdy else get on, do your other halfs become band widows/widowers if youre playing all the time or do you make sure you plan that quality time together to keep things good

i love playing in a band immensely, but i also love going out on a night out and chilling too, so its important to have that balance

how much support/grief do you get?

Rob

like yourself I am blessed in this department! Otherwise I couldn't do it. My problem is I do other stuff as well as the band, and when everything collides at the same time things can get a little tense! Still all of it is my own choice. This the reason that when we are not playing I don't announce that i'm off out see such and such a band much as i would like to!
Thankfully in this band we understand that we do have to keep the home fires burning as it were, and so we do book hols etc no probs as long as it is in advance. I probably do more of that the other members i'm sorry to say!But we still get a good number of gigs in a year.
if someone else in the band has booked off then I try to make the most of it by organising something, day out, camping or whatever. You could do this as well but make out to the missus that you have put your foot down with the band, and told them you want this time off, putting her first etc. This may earn you short term browmie points but the risk in this strategy is that SHE might call upon you to do the same again at a later date!

Other thing i do is put a few quid in a jar after every gig for a day out or towards something that her in doors can benefit from after putting up with the pain! Good luck

p.s before anyone else gets in....yes the pain is me!

I don't get any grief at all. I only gig now on average once a week, which isn't too much. I spend very little on new gear/strings/picks etc so most of my gig money actually goes towards paying the bills at home and running our vehicle.
I don't really go out socially when I'm not playing so I'm always bringing money in (small amounts I admit).
The main thing that suffers though is that we get hardly any quality time together as when I'm not gigging there's still our young kids to look after, eg tonight I'm not gigging so the missus is going out with her mates whilst I watch the kids.

Ditto with everyone else really! I do get the odd grumble if i book too many roadtrips during the year but local gigs arent too bad.
My arguement is that I've always done this, long before we even met! However, i do concede that situations do change and now littl'un has appeared I do have to make the extra effort to keep all parties happy... but thats all part of the fun right!! ;D

The minister for domestic affairs and finance is very understanding of my " hobby". We have a disabled daughter who requires a lot of care so she knows that this is my way of relieving the stress I have with regard to this. I just wish she could come and see me more often as we cannot seem to get someone to look after Emily at weekends.
I am very blessed that my wife understands.

Best wishes

i packed up playing for quite a long time before i met my other half, so when i started playing again she gave me a real hard time about it, however over a period of a few months, she started coming to watch us practice and after a while she started to take a bit of interest in the band from a critical point of view, she doesnt pull any of her punches, now she runs the web site runs the p a, does the posters gets some of the gigs and has become a non playing member of the band. so i am very lucky

I'm single meself, and on the occasions I've had to choose between girl and whichever band I'm with, it's always been band. My guitar has never lied to me, cheated on me, or made me endure witless nights with its family, friends and or colleagues. Couldn't do the grief thing, I'm not built for stress! :)

when the other half says "its cos i miss you when youre out playing", it makes it so much eaier to understand than " im sick of ya never being here", fortunately i get the former, but when its from a "missing you" point of view you can see where theyre coming from, its not nice to be neglected,i dont get too much grief either, but yes in a relationship quality time together is really important, you really need to have that balance, i like to do other things as well as the band,go away somewhere, cinema, night in with a takeawy, go out and get pissed, go to a gig, have a romantic meal somewhere.... a lot of guys ive played with bands in over the years either have nothing but the band, or cant wait to get away from their other half ha ha

I am blessed with a wife who doubles up as my roadie - LOL.

Me and the missus are joined at the hip and do everything together including running two businesses

Our daughter is grown up now so we have alot of freedom in that respect.

I always say to Anne that she doesn't have to come to the gigs but she's always there,

Bless her cotton socks,

Rick.

Her who must be ignored is a saint. When I was in my last band she came along to most of the gigs and usually brought 1 or 2 friends along even though she hated the lead guitarist (funny how women are usually good judges of character!). Then when we started the duo she got involved and became admin assistant,pa,booking secretary, call centre operative and tea lady. Along with these dutys she was also my personal cheauffeur after the obligotary aprez gig beer or 2! Warra woman !!!
Maybe thats the answer..get them involved in a non management administration type roll (wouldnt want any spinal tap type probs..lol ). Suppose we are lucky, Its second time around for both of us and our kids are now old enough to be wanting to do their own thing of an evening. And on my nights off?..well...hahem! :o)

You could always consider giving her a good seeing to when you get home after the gig! Mrs Innuendo is up for anything providing I don't wake her up.(and pull her nightie down when I'done)

yep theyre usually very very good judges of character indeed, it has to be said, but dont go for the "janine in spinal tap" territory its bound to end in tears....."janines come up with these astrology charts and a new look for each of the band members"..........

@ innuendo, i would do if i wasnt so tired, as soon as i get home i usually spend most of my time raiding the fridge as im always totally starving

Hi Guys......My husband is in The Kicks and just wanted to comment that I love him being in band, first and foremost it's something he loves and secondly he gets paid for it!!! He works shifts so i get to see him little through the week but have no problem whatsoever with him gigging once or 3 times in a weekend as it's his choice. I get to go out every weekend with him if i want to go and usually take some friends with me as well. And yeah ..... i have turned into the gig booker, website builder, poster maker and drinks getter but so what ... I love it really lol

When I was married, the wife encouraged me to do more gigs. Found out she was seeing somone else whilst I was out gigging. She's German, and I thought about a Hitler doesn't like Steve's ex video, but as she's the love child of Adolf and Eva Braun, I doubt it will appear. Single now, and the groupies are great even just to boost your ego. Not taken one up on an offer, yet. Can't wait for the next Darwen gig, with the hottie that wants me to "slide it in" ala Whitesnake!!

@ robert redfern-you just HAD to get me started, didn’t you, bro?????
you’ve all, probably, heard me go on about “rock chick to margaret thatcher"? i call her that for very good reasons-as told-when we met up i had a place in a band, a norton 750 and i'd convinced my boss that, one day, i would make up that humongous deficit in my "flexi-time" hours that i'd accrued through rehearsals/gigging.
first two/three years she's (apparently) happy to go along with this, then, gradually, but, inexorably, the complaints start-“you’re spending too much time with THAT band”! –“You never take me out anymore, you’re always gigging/rehearsing” – (then come out with me, then!!), “you really should get a haircut, my friends (all middle class, suited and booted, green wellie brigade “posh people”, met at the school functions) are always talking about it- I get embarrassed!!”-“that bikes a nuisance; WE(I.e.-YOU!) don’t need a bike and a car. plus it costs too much to run!! “, “we’ll go shopping this weekend to get you some decent clothes. you need some smart trousers, a shirt and a proper jacket instead of the scruffy old leather one!! my mother’s always on at me, saying I’m letting the myself down by not making sure you look alright when you see the family!!” and don’t ever get her started on the “groupies” !! (in the early days- i was stupid and faithful!!)
you catch the drift?-this got worse and worse until we split about seven years later-leaving me with no band, no bike, short hair, a mountain of debt and a wardrobe full of clothes that I hardly ever wore!! I know a great deal about the culture of “house parties”, which are the correct disco’s and restaurants to frequent I(where one may be seen by “the right people” and sundry other posh pursuits. (as far as I’m concerned, it’s all WAYYY too much information!!) and having to start all over again.

We don`t gig as often as we used to, about 50 gigs last year, enough to keep me de-stressed. My wife Liz is tolerant of it, but doesn`t particularly like it to be honest. It`s rare now for her to come to gigs, mainly because of our three young kids, but also cos she`s been there, seen it,done that etc. for years. Sadly, at home I`m not a rock god, just Daddy.
I think you guys who`s partners love what they do are really lucky, but it`s important to remember that priorities change, especially as you get older.
Rock God is good..
But Daddy is forever.
