Thinking of splashing out and buying a decent guitar..

Thinking of splashing out and buying a decent guitar...

Where would I get best deal on a Les Paul Standard, in traditional suburst??

Not particularly bothered on what year/model - just has to be new, and a proper USA GIBSON

Go to Japan and buy an Edwards Les Paul. Gibson these days are WAY overpriced and underbuilt. Especially the stuff they send over here.

The best Les Paul I have played in 10 years is an Edwards LP Custom bought in Tokyo.I played it in Louisiana, 4 hours north of New Orleans

hi
well after years of playing second hand fenders i was persuaded to splash out on a brand new gibson les paul about a month ago. i don't know if its the cheapest it cost 2k from pmt in salford. its probably a bit more due to me being left handed, but its the best money i've ever spent :) my gf isnt impressed with having to sleep in the spare bedroom now though :)

Mr NWB, If it has to say Gibson on the headstock go to Guitar Center in either NYC, Atlanta or Los Angeles. It's worth the flight. Of course, if you watch the Youtube footage of how Lesters are put together, you may think again....

I mentioned Edwards because one of my best friends from the US had a Gibson and won't touch another. There are NO '59s left going cheap. ;o)

BTW, Tokai and Ibanez are the reason for the term "lawsuit Les Paul", 2 companies that were making Les Pauls to the same quality for a 10th of the price.

They did the same with Strats and Teles. :o)

I always always always wanted a Gibson LP ... then. one day, in the centre (center) of Nashville I went into Gruhn's guitars to buy one ...
and came out with a PRS Custom22 .... BEST thing I ever did!! The Leses were planks compared to this beauty!!
......... and echo Mick's comments about Guitar Centre (Center) ... bought my Gibson acoustic in Vegas .... don't forget to tell them that since 11/9 (9/11) you're allowed to take them on the plane as extra carry on at no extra charge (the guy in Guitar Centre (Center)) will give you a photocopy of the legislation!! yaaay!
Good hunting Paul

Check out my Standard Premuim Plus............ its a 2007, bought used but in Mint Condition from the States about 2 years ago for about £1300

www.facebook.com/.../photo.php

THE most Awesome Guitar i have ever owned....... and i can confidently say i have probably owned more than most of the rest of you put together(seriously)

I've owned loads of PRS's, 24's, 22's, Singlecuts etc....... but they're just NOT a Les Paul!

this one on ebay looks tasty..........

cgi.ebay.co.uk/.../eBayISAPI.dll:MEWAX:IT

Don't forget......... when you sell on ebay about 8 to 10% of the selling price is taken in Ebay and Paypal fees.......... so if you arrange to buy away from ebay and point out the masive fees....... and pay cash you could negotiate a much better price......... always worth asking - some will, some won't....... but he who don't ask gets F*** All ;-)

@ H2H
"PRS's, 24's, 22's, Singlecuts etc....... but they're just NOT a Les Paul"

Think that's the point I was trying to put across ... having wanted a Les Paul for ages and ages based on the looks, and kudos if you like, when i finally got my paws on one (well several) i just couldn't get along with them ... hence the PRS choice .. in my opinion a much more playable guitar.

as i say in my opinion

Willow

p.s. have you had as many guitars as Kerbcrawler's Ian(?) has had basses??? lol

Im not bothered if it looks/plays like a plank - its just a childhood dream to own a USA Gibson Les Paul, and ever since I went to the Gibson guitar factory in Tennesee a few years back.

I'm probably looking around the 1,800 mark if buying from the UK. I might have to get a mate to buy one from the US, he's over there at the moment... but not entirely sure he'll buy the right one. ha!

I'll award 1000 CRP points to the person who can find the cheapest Gibson LP standard from a UK retailer.

If its an online retailer, then post the link on here.

theres a place called aire guitars near bradford, hes always had great prices on gibson stuff,i think he has a shop on ebay too, and bingley has a shop called spectre sound, which always gives you a good deal on gibson prices without having to haggle too much

yes im from yorkshire.

i would avoid dawsons, music ground etc all top price

Paul, I'd be EXTREMELY reluctant to recommend spending that much on a guitar you haven't played. Try going to PMT in Salford and trying some out first. £1800 is a lot of money and Gibsons QC is notorious for "It'll do". You don't want to spend an extra £50 to £100 getting it set up/fret dressed.

Last time I went in they had one that had been PLEK'd. That makes one HELL of a difference.

check out the one on ebay i left a link to above......... offer him cash and explain about the no Ebay and paypay fees etc and you'll get it much nearer £1500........

Only in Birmingham too - so you can try it first aswell!

@Willow - yes, many many more!

PMT is the mutts nuts, but they don't have the best deals.
Considering a LP Std for guitar #30 myself, so I'll be interested in the outcome of this one.

I often buy from these people:

dont buy one without playing it first is the best advice anyone can give , if your buying a second hand LP check its not been damaged where the headstock joins the body (head breaks off easily if they fall over) Ive had a couple of LPs and I still have my 1980 Deluxe, they are as good as people say, the sustain is fantastic and to be honest anything else is a pretender, there have been some good deals on Gary moore signature models, if your going to spend that much make you you find a good one, and haggle like mad for cash and get the dealer to throw in strings/ case etc. I dont use mine much at gigs its very heavy, i used it exclusively through the 80s (i was younger and fitter) I was lucky enough to have mine as my 18th birthday present off my parents it cast £350 from the late great Keith Hand. If your unsure take someone along who knows their onions , a guitar like that is for a lifetime

@ rob

spectre sound has shut down now mate. i used to get all my guitars from there, really great guys who never ever made me feel like a pleb, even though i am one!

@paul - dont listen to these philostines, usa gibsons are the mutts nuts pal. one thing to consider though, does it have to be a standard? i bought a classic and to be honest it was miles better than the standards id tried out. its pretty much the same to be honest but the bridge pickup is overwound giving you a much better sound. i picked mine up in 2003 for 1300.00 and apart from me snapping its neck, its still going strong. and bits taken a fair bit of abuse!
just a thought!

Cheers for the comments - Yeah, would never buy a guitar "cold" off the web - Although I would be willing to travel to get a good deal.

@Ben - Yeah.. a proper gibson USA les paul is the way forward! deffo. PRS's may sound/feel amazing, but its like driving round in a womans sports car... All grunt, with no balls!

Is Rimmers still going in Blackburn? - they used to stock some good guitars, and did deals for "cash"

# Posted by delete 79 - 13/11/2009, 11:32 (GMT)

think rimmers is still there but not too sure whether the quality of stuff they stock is quite up to the level it used to be. think they now subscribe to the idea that "cheap shit sells"

I've had a few good deals from PMT (but when it was sound control - are they the same co in diff clothing??)
I just found the cheapest deal I could find on the net and took the print in with me ... they've always matched the price as long as the online deal is in stock, free delivery etc etc. If you don't take the print but tell them where it's cheaper they'll check there and then.

Willow
p.s. Mr Bands ... " Im not bothered if it looks/plays like a plank ...." I have to ask ... why would you want to pay £1800 ... i understand the boyhood dream an' all that but ffs ... !!
methinks the NWB contributions are mounting up!! lololol

Yeah Rimmers is still open......got a few in too. One good thing bout rimmers is they will price match any genuine uk dealer. So if you find the cheapest retailer and get them to give you a written quote or download if its an internet dealer, if you see the same model in Rimmers they will match it.

when going out to guitar shops a great idea is to, have a look around the shop for aggggesssss, then go away for a bit , maybe go and have something to eat somewhere then go back in and go with your gut instinct, in the haze of guitar shops its very easy to get carried away, so cool to go away and have a think then come back in, bank card at the ready

I think you're spending far too much money. 3 years ago you could get one of these for a £1000 - £1200. But as the exchange rate is so shit, the prices have escalated at a stupid rate.
I'd be patient. My brother got a Les Paul Studio 3 years ago,in London, brand new, in honey, not sunburst for £800.00. I would wait for the exchange rate to get better if you really want a new one from the states, it's got to be worth the wait.

Good luck with your dream purchase.
Have a holiday to the States and buy one there, it'll cost the same as buying just the guitar in England.
Cheap flights to the States, check out Travelzoo.
