and I can't bite my lips anymore

I only discovered this site about 6 months ago, and I must say that I have enjoyed being a member. I've had some great laughs on it, met a lot of really great people through it and found new gigs on it.

I understand that there must be a degree of 'moderation' on any site, but surely the best kind is self moderation by all the members.

For instance, when someone posts a blog that basically states that all covers and tribute bands are tossers and only in it for the money, on a site that is 90% populated by those same people JUST IGNORE IT.

Don't give them the satisfaction of getting you riled; don't make the blog a hot post; don't make it a point of interest.

It seems reasonably obvious that it is done with the express intention of p*****g us all off, and for that very reason we should ignore it. The big problem is that a lot of very intelligent and decent people try to reply in a positive and counter argument (thinking that the person who posted the blog is interested in a reasoned debate), only to get more and more venomous replies until everyone descends into a kind of 'must score one off you' frenzy. And then?

Then we lose one of the good guys.

I've been very fortunate in meeting Scott from Metalleeka and he is very definately one of the good guys. And now he's left us, and on the very blog he posted to tell us he's had enough, what happens? It ends up with a couple of guys sorting out having a beer together - WHICH IS EXACTLY HOW THIS SITE SHOULD BE!

Now at the risk of p*****g off Mr NWB (agian!), it's all very well to say that there is no censorship on this site, that all we have to do is adhere to the T&C's, but when any one person (be it the site owner/manager or representitives) decides what can or cannot be said on the site then that IS censorship. I agree fully with all the comments about not getting personal and sticking to music etc etc, but at the end of the day (the sun goes down), if anyone is told what they think is wrong, or cannot be posted, or blogs are deleted, then that IS censorship.

In reality, if we are to stick to the rules now being imposed, then the original blog (stating that covers bands are only in it for the money), should have been removed.
It is only the same as me posting a blog 'All original material bands are only interested in making music to become famous and make large amounts of money'. Which is exactly the same argument, only turned round.

I beg you all to remember that we are all musicians (even if we are drummers) and do it for the love of it. That's all that does, and should, matter. There's enough crap going on in the world without our little community tearing itself apart for no good reason.

So the next time someone posts a blog that is calculated to be prevocative - JUST IGNORE IT.

And Scott - come back to us.

I'm in a covers band, and I also write my own stuff. I see no reason why one is more or less valid than the other, and both give me great enjoyment and satisfaction.

Simple. No need for anyone to fall out, no need for Scott to leave, no need for Mr NWB to invite a member of the community to F**k off, the whole thing is pointless and sets us all back christ knows how long. We may or may not have totally different motivations but we're all here (or at least we should be) for the same reason, to promote and support our local music scene.

Aah, the voice of reason atlast. Frankie, you are exactly the reason I joined NWB in the first place - you love music!

And thankyou Mr Sugar Bullets - let's make this a community to be proud of

Wise words Ayerpal.I originally joined this site as a fan, but through friendships built up on here I started to help out finding gigs for those bands that were kind enough to put up with me tagging along on gig nights. Now I have a succesfull business running entertainment bookings for a growing number of venues here in the North. Could I have done it without the good folks on here? Most unlikely!!!

I am passionate about music ( Having spent all my adult life so far 'in the industry') and it is a real pleasure and privilege to know so many muso's that share my passion.

My own personal view, but I thought this was the reason for the sites being, so we could all share our love of live music, whatever its form.
nuff said from me on the subject.

Wise words Alyerpal. This site is only mildy moderated compared to other forums/blogs e.t.c - I think everyone has had it too good on NWB for a long while, but the boat has finally been tipped over, and action HAD to be taken.

99.9% of the people on here can post blogs and comments with no problems. It's just the 0.01% who spoil it for the rest of us.

Posting slanderous and obscene comments/blogs is strictly forbidden. Google caches EVERYTHING.

I have to be uber careful with NWB, as theres been occasions where non members have contacted me via solicitors about libelous comments.

If anyone wants to take the reins of this site - then soo be it. They have my upmost respect.

No, I said that the people who cant adhere to the site T&Cs can '£$%£ off'. Ive never banned anyone from the site (been close), but this site causes me a lot of grief for very little return. So you can probs understand my venting of frustration :-)

good post alyerpal, well put.
i do sympathise with paul tho...
as i understand it, he gets very little back for a lot of work + little thanx in some cases.
lets not piss him off where he s gonna turn round and shut the whole thing down all together.
although i must say i did join in with the banter over the
"dalek affair"
but i do most definately think a lot of people have made friends on here + spent many a happy hour on the blog page. lets face it who wants to watch.... the x fu**ter, or im important get me out of here,

I'd agree in principle, however censorship is something that I personally associate with complete freedom of speech. That is not the case on NWB as there are clearly defined (and also unwritten, socially recognised conduct guidelines) terms and conditions.

As I've said before when "I should be able to say what I want" has been brought up, this site is not a free for all. It's not "teh intarwebz, d00d". Also, more importantly, it's not owned by anyone other than mr NWB. Who does all the work.

Agree 1000% on the response to trolls thing though. The only problem with it is that trolling actually works because trolls know that some people LIKE to argue and can't physically NOT respond. lol.

The blogs that started all this trouble are still there.
I have asked that they be removed but can understand if they are not.
I tried to stop the Troll with a tactic that worked wonders on another Fourm but will admit that this backfired somewhat.
I really hope no more members leave because of this.

Best wishes

@JohnFV: I hope we're cool after our late night love in last night? I do still find it genuinely laugh out loud that that tactic would work. I mean, chocolate? Good lord!!!

I don't want anyone else to leave and I would also like to think that we can encourage Scott to come back, so for my part I apologise for preaching.

ST

Well I try not to make a habit of falling out with everyone matey ;-)

At the end of the day we pass this way but once so what's the fugging point of falling out with people who make a contribution to this site in the way that you do.

I have found that most people on here are genuine who only wish to help.

So first pints still on me next week Matey

Best wishes

John

on a more serious note.......I just put a spoon in the knife section in my cutlery draw. Does that make me a bad person?
Lifes too short folks, end of the day everyone has an opinion and whether their opinion is right or wrong is purely a matter of opinion. So, in my opinion, lets all get totally trolleyed together and have some bloody FUN

hopefully this blog will draw closure on it all and we can get on with the business of promoting,making/listening to and providing music whilst having some fun in between times? yes, there might be unresolved queries-but-in the whole scope of things -are they THAT important or is it time to say "lessons learnt, let's move on and enjoy the site once more"?
and-on that subject-@ dresden north end- no, my friend-drummers are not musicians-they're far more important than that-they're percussionists!!! :-)
oh-and scott?-you belong here-everyone (and i mean EVERYONE!) would be delighted to see you back. :-)

Thanks to everyone for their comments. I must admit, I thought long and hard before posting this blog (and spent a fair amount of time typing and retyping it!), but I think it has worked.

We seem to have all regained a bit of perspective and I'm wholeheartedly with Viking - let's all have a bit of closure and get on with the fun and games again!
