A revue
Firstly I would like to qualify this by saying that I am not a huge metallica fan, and only really know the Black album.
The venue was slightly strange, because the main doors lead virtually straight onto the stage area, with seating areas for the punters to left and right. Nice pub though, quite traditional, good beer and freindly staff.
I arrived towards the end of the first set - the lads had just plunged into 'Whiskey in The Jar', and the sound was amazing. Loud, but clear, with all the instruments coming through and no muddiness. They finished the set with 'Sad but True' which went down a storm and had the lads who were with me (one of whom is a huge Metallica fan), nodding in agreement at how good the band was.
During the break I went and said hello to Scott (lead singer) who I've met before, and he introduced me to the rest of the boys; Robert on lead guitar, Kev on bass and Gareth who (like me) hangs around at the back and hits things.
Set 2 - didn't know all the songs, but the obligatory 'Nothing Else Matters',along with 'Master of Puppets' and loads more, all well recieved by the crowd (30ish? - yeah, I think so). We were also treated to a guest appearance of Shell on lead guitar!
As I said, the sound was awesome - the only critisism I can make is that the vocals neede to be a bit bigger; louder in the mix and with more reverb - and the guys played with enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment, and extremely bloody well!
For a third gig, with that amount of material, I was seriously impressed, and my mate the Metallica fan couldn't stop talking about them. Given a few more gigs under their belts, a little tweeking to the sound and generally getting familiar and relaxed with the material, these guys are going to be one serious tribute band. I can see them becoming a firm favourite at bikers rallies and festivals.
Well done lads - I'll be back for more and next time I want to hear 'Of Wolf and Man'!
