What would you leave out

A little discussion that is going to take place next week is what to leave out of this 1st set. It always goes down well but we feel we could improve on it and we have about up to 7 possible replacements. We are not classic rock niether are we indie so the type of song is irrelevant its some ideas from you on here as to what you would do in the circumstances so I have got some outside views to use next week
This is the set list in approx order although we sometimes start with Seven nation Army rather than Substitute
Substitute the Who
Beginning of the Twist Futureheads
seven Nation Army White Stripes
Your Love Alone Manic Street P
When Youre Gone Brian Adams
Back in Black AC.DC
Save Tonight Eagle Eye Cherry
Angry Mob Kaiser Chiefs
By The Way Chili Peppers
Your views would be appreciated

I think that it's a good set, but I'd take away Bryan Adams and Eagle Eye Cherry, maybe put a more well known futureheads song in and leave seven nation army till the second set, so the pissed people can 'doooo do doo doo do dooo doooo' it. Them kind of songs are always better in the second.

Just my view.

Back in Black between Bryan Adams and Eagle Eyey Cherry???? We tend to do a lighter first set with a big opener and a big closer. Then floor it second set!!!

Introduce some better known tunes in the first set, finish the first set with a strong number (Back in Black)? that will keep them in ready for the second set and then intro some of the not so often played covers interspersed with a few good old favourites.

Always be aware of the client age groups and cater your sets to suit.

why not add songs to ur set and do 12 instead of 10? - then just change the order so that the set 'builds up'

Keef
What would you say is not a well known song in that first set. Our second set is very strong in our opinion anyway so I am sure some of those will go to the first set as we are introducing some new what i would describe as crowd pleasersand probably they woulsd go in the second set

Karen
Its a bit misleading really because we have about 14 in the second set dont know why that just how its happened. We could increase the numbers but we think we could alternate anyway depending on the crowd as Keef says. Its more of wondering what people really would not want to listen to if they were watching us

prob manics and futurehead are maybe not as well known to the average customer, depends on there ages tho ( if in the early to mid 20's no probs, older than that and they may not get the same reaction).
Try bringing in some of the 80's and 90's material to give a wider appeal. Loads of top tunes out there (have a look at the set list charts to see which tunes are most often played (usually indicates their popularity)
Hopefully thats helpful and not a load of old school crap mate.

yeah there does seem to be a bit of a void between the extremes, how about U2,Nirvana, Radiohead, Blur etc?
Put some country in , or better still some soul....

Play what your band enjoys playing and stick to what you're good at.
There is no set formula and everybody has different tastes in music. If a song works for you....keep it.
If it doesn't...bin it.
Keep you options open....
I much prefer to hear a band playing something different than playing the boring old corny covers that most bands feel they've 'got to do'.
Create your own identity by being different and good luck with it.
Just my humble opinion.

Good point but I dont think we are quite happy with it but we all have different ideas as to which songs should stay and which should go. As you say its all opinion and there is no good or bad but just interesting to hear what others think of the songs. Our set is a bit different from alot of bands and thats what we set out to do and its very easy to to slide into the same old covers but perhaps sometime you need some of those as well to adapt to your audience as Keef said above. I suppose when it comes down to it you do your best and enjoy it but you cannot please everyone all of the time

yes nigel - stick to what u do cos its good - and not every other band out there does it - thats why you'l get booked back to places.
its always the same though especially when uve played the same songs week in and out ur always gonna get a bit fed up with the odd few!
Losing my religion is our pet hate...we dropped it and bugger me...get asked..why havnt you played losing my religion?? cant win!!!

My band play 70's punk so we're a bit restricted in songs we chose to play due to our 'time' frame. 1976-1980
We get round this by playing 'lesser' known songs but by 'popular' bands of the era.
Our target audience is 'older' punk fans who remember all our stuff and we get loads of comments like 'bloody hell, I've not heard that in years' etc.
Pick the bands you want to cover and then pick a good tune by them but try to avoid the obvious ones that all the others play. We still have to play the 'standards' but we get more of a buzz when people comment on our 'classic fillers'.
For example.....
Every Punk covers band plays 'Babylon's Burning' by the Ruts.....we play 'In a Rut' instead
They all play bloody 'Teenage Kicks' by the Undertones.....we play 'I got your number' instead.
Hell, you don't want to be called 'just another covers band' do you.
Be different.....
Although I'm an old punk, I think your choice of songs is interesting, some standards and some lesser known 'hits' and some 'crowd pleasers' that would keep me, and hopefully your audience, guessing what 'forgotten gem' your gonna play next.
A good blend.....
But this is just my opinion.....

What are the 7 possible replacement songs??

I'd lose 'Angry Mob' by the Kaisers altogether, there's playing songs that not everybody else plays and then there's filler. It's filler, I doubt anybody watching would miss it. Where the Kaiser Cheifs are concerned I don't think anything other than their biggest hits are worth playing so I'd go for 'I Predict A Riot' or 'Ruby' - I don't personally like them but the crowd like em at Marigolds.

I listened to the Futureheads tune and quite like it but 'Your Love Alone' is a bit blah, (I prefer 'Motorcycle Emptiness'). I'd put 'When You're Gone' and 'Save Tonight' together & both of them would work at ours.

I love '7 Nation Army' and 'By The Way', I like that 'Substitute' is a strong opener but also agree that & 7 Nation Army would work as an opener too - in fact I think I prefer it as an opener then into Substitute. I would finish on a popular pacy number after By The Way though
