following on from the post below....not resurecting the 'other' stuff

So it seems like a good idea for originals bands to play support roles at some covers band gigs. No one loses :)

So post here if you are a covers/tribute band Willing to have an originals band support you at some of your gigs

And post here if you are an originals band wanting to to support a covers band.

Hopfully then we can start paring off and get the best of both world rolled into one :)

Hello yes ICE band would be fine with that although next year for the gigs we are doing we're asking for a fee/petrol expenses.

We've done a few gigs with originals bands supporting us, we've always stayed to watch them and give our full support (they in return do the same).. Always a happy medium and never any animosity.. It's still music at the end of the day whatever shape or form.

Just my 1p worth

We'd be glad to. We're not good enough to dare ask for petrol or expenses yet!

A good idea but with logistical problems.

1. The audience of the originals band are unlikely to stick around for the covers band' set and vice versa.

2. Covers bands play for a fixed fee therefore the landlord would rather his pub stay busy all night with a covers band playing two spots. Would the covers band be prepared to share some of their fee with the originals band?

3. Would all covers bands be prepared to share their backline?

In theory it is a good idea but I can't think of many venues where it would work.

Well we won't find THAT out unless it gets a chance.

@ Jah Mission Vibes.

good points, so how about:

1. The covers band starts a little earlier for their first set...and a little later for their second set giving a little time 'in the middle' for the support.

2. negated by 1 above

3. That's what this post is here to discover. :)

Ok then well if any other venue would like to give their opinion that would be great. Would you welcome a band playing originals alongside a covers band? or would you see it as a distraction that your punters wouldn't appreciate?

Also covers bands - would you be prepared to share an evening and backline with an originals band and forfeiting part of your gig money?

I play in both and my personal opinion is that I would welcome an originals support but I would be sceptical of supporting a covers band unless there was similarities in the two bands musical styles. My other stipulation would be that both bands come to an agreement with backline sharing.

I was replying to Bad Horsie - Yes "G or R" that may work.

@ Jah Mission Vibes

Definitely we would need venue input here, but speaking for myself I'd have no problem with sharing backline and fee. It's not about us and them and never has been IMO.

The only problem my particular band would have with this is that our drummer uses a rack mounted left handed kit. If the originals could handle that, no worries.

the Venue (coolers) would be good for this set up cos its a late gig full of all ages. May be worth a call, sort it with the club rather than chasing bands.

I think it's a good idea but I don't see many covers bands wanting to share their PA. At ours it would only work with the originals band going on before not between.

From a venue point of view I'm not bothered if the originals fans leave when the covers come on or not because they've been there in the first place spending money and it looks busier when the cover bands customers are arriving which is a good thing...

Our main problem would be confusion for the customers who might think the original band that's on when they arrive is the band Ive got on for the entire night and not a cover, which could cause some to leave.

Yep...I understand it wouldn't work for some venues or some bands whether cover or original.
We would be willing to share our backline and PA etc. but its quite understandable if some feel differently.
There could possibly be some drifting of punters after the support slot...but I wouldnt imagine it would take anything away from what would be expected if it was just a covers band playing.
I don't think confused customers would come into it...not at our gigs anyway as we always promote the gig well in advance and all info would be easily available from either band or the venue itself.

Well confusion would definitely be an issue at ours because we'd be going from having one band to two and when people are arriving late on ready for the band at midnight, and already drunk, it would be easy for them to assume that the originals band was the band we'd booked for the night regardless of how many posters we had around the place or prior advertising we'd done. When people get drunk it goes out of the window!!
