It appears to be working... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8413557.stm

But: Good news / bad news

"The Facebook page includes a link to homeless charity site Shelter, which has raised nearly £30,000 in donations. "
Hooray!!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8413557.stm

"Rage Against The Machine, meanwhile, are signed to Epic Records, which is part of Sony BMG, the same label as McElderry. "
Boooo...!!!

Does that mean that Mr Cowell could reap the benefits from No.1 and 2 ?

sony bmg is huge anyway theres only a handful of majors now, cos each one is massive, get it bought!!

the lad Joe who won is talented so nothing against him,i tipped him to win about 6 weeks ago, im buying the rage single cos wanna see some rock back in the charts, rock music is huge and the charts dont reflect that whatsoever -( and it always seems that the x factor is the christmas number 1 without any competition pah.......... :-(

Maybe there should have been a campain for everyone to buy "two little boys" instead then. After all it is the 40th anniversary of the song which was xmas no.1 in 1969 and I would rather the money go to Rolf.

ps - Rage are currently no.1 this week!

Rob ... "rock music is huge and the charts dont reflect that whatsoever "

I bet the rock charts do!

Seriously tho ... we all have our favourite musical idiom (whooo!), but i'm afraid buying rock music is nowhere near as huge as buying crap pop music ... how do i know this ... cos the POP charts tell us so.

Production line manufactured product ... sales recorded at predetermined points of sale ... payola in any other name .. i just wouldn't worry about it!

@TCS .. yaaay .. my mate does two little boys on karaoke to take the piss but it goes down a storm!!!

oooops ... "my mate does two little boys " - perhaps I should rephrase that!
LOL

i think the lyrics are rather appropriate and it will be good to look back to see that in a list of christmas no 1s, so i've bought it twice

Hey,Why does anybody give a shit, whats at number 1 ? Anyone who's ever looked at,or listened to RATM lyrics will surely know that their concerns are definitely not,"the pop charts".If you don't like Mr Cowells products, don't bloody buy 'em,turn the telly off.If your concern is charity, ring 'em up and make a donation yourself -there simple!

"he'l reap the benefits from that too....bloody genious!!! ..."

Ah... but he'll be sharing them with BMG and RATM!!

If it does knock the X factor machine of the top then it could/should be a regular Xmas feature, something I'd look forward too. Probably better next time to find the smallest record label releasing a WELL WRITTEN AND ORIGINAL SONG and get that to number 1 year in year out - instead of the cheesy/over produced drivel that eminates from these music mogul's digital/airbrushed/plastic pop factory.

Come on, lets be honest how many X factor finallists / runners up / contestants singles does the music world really need ???

I honeslty think true talent has statying power, is earned and INFLUENCES people of all ages.

OK X factor is great for kids and the like to watch (mine do) but I think it's contributary factor to originality is low.

I could go on forever - OK it gives thousands a shot at the 15 mins of fame but it also lines the pockets of millionaires OF BIG BIG COMPANIES!! Whilst directly shadowing those people who go out there week after week, support spot after support spot earning NOTHING to be FRESH, ORIGINAL, ENTERTAINING and above all else they write there own music, lyrics and some play there own instruments!!!

ok...i is finkin that u dont like mr.cowell, or x-factor too much, but reality tv is what weve got today...theres no TOTP, no grey whistle test etc(even i dont remember that!)even mr boogeywoogey man's hootenanny cant generate a decent act nowadays!
what chance does our future generation have when all theyre exposed to is tv with acts whose 'looks' overtake their musical talents, people who are hyped up by the media as the ones our kids look up to and want to be like...
im sorry but id rather my kids have leona lewis or alexandra burke...will young or joe mcwots'hecalled as someone to aspire to be like than some bad mannered ill mouthed idiot that many of us find lurking around these days.
you're right theres always going to be someone who gets his dollars from these situations but i bet any one of us would swap our pension funds for simon cowells regardless of how we feel about it x

The point we're all missing with this is that we all have a great love for music, and the vast majority of the population do not have the same depth of feeling for it. They WANT convenience media to give them easily digestible tunes in an easily accessible package.

Why do you think the Sun newspaper, McDonalds, Big Brother, Strictly Come Dancing etc are so popular? Yes, the media feed people safe, middle of the road programming. Why? It's formulaic and it's SAFE.

There is no way EGGHEADS would get the ratings that Harry Hills TV Burp does. That's what popularity IS in the mainstream. People in the media know what they are doing, and no matter how much we dislike it, it hasn't changed in centuries. Only the technology to broadcast has got better so the packaging has become easier to manipulate and distribute.

"Artistic Integrity" won't put food on the table folks. lol.

I tell you what that Morrello chap talks sense!!

"Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello has said that beating the X Factor single to Christmas number one will be a "wonderful dose of anarchy". Here here!!

"There are a lot of people who don't feel represented by it and this Christmas in the UK they're having their say." Oh yes!!

As opposed to Cowell:

In reaction to this multi billionaire and tone deaf Simon reponded to the Xmas bout during a visit for a fitting of his new £1/4m belly trousers.
"Shows like Britain's Got Talent and The X Factor have actually got people more interested in music again, and are sending more people into record stores." Buuuuuullllllshiiiiiiit !!!!!!

RECORDS!! Come on grandad keep up!!

hmm - is this an example of irony...or coincidence?

Facebook page - 'Rage against the machine for christmas number one' - members at last count...800,422!

i have it on good authority - as i havnt heard the song (yet) myself that one of the lines/lyrics goes..now this may not be exact...

"f**k you..i wont do what you tell me!"

so...irony or coincidence????

i think the wurzels combine harvester song should be up there battling it out as well haha xx

Scott from Metaleeka finds it hilariously ironic for that exact point.

"Just buy this song cos I said so"

......"uh.....OK!"

"Artistic Integrity" won't put food on the table folks. lol.

Sorry Mick, it can. :)

Is it really that popular or is it just the media hub that keeps it spinning.
I personally do not agree with this. I think eventually it grinds people down to the point where they conform to the 'sheepish' society. It degrades 'individuallity'. Promotes apathy. It's usually born during teenage years, fashion and trend. Brainwashing.

I'm in the polar opposite camp to that. 90% of the population are sheep. That's why we can give them anything we want as long as it's processed to taste.

OK ... lets have a conspiracy theory

Remember when Lily Allen was "discovered" via Myspace??
Not a chance ... already backed by record labels , production companies etc ..

Well get this ... the Facebook page was initiated by the very people it was purporting to be against .... !!
Why?
Well,
a) it keeps Xfactor in the news after the show's finished
b) it makes more people buy the winner's record as they are affronted by these rock chappies!
c) so, if XF made #1 with no intervention it would sell X number of copies, Now, even if it only hits #2 it will still sell a lot more!!
d) Plus, the record they choose to push is on their label/management!

win, win, and, er, win!!

Clever bastards these marketing men eh??

ha ha haaaa I love it!
