The Gate was well and truly rocked by Twin Lizzy
Being a diehard fan of Thin Lizzy (a band who I feel are actually very much under rated), it is one of my great regrets that I never got to see them live.
So I went to the Moses gate last night with high hopes for an evening of Lizzy music, not really that bothered how faithful it was to the original, just as long as it was recognisable.
Well - what can i say? Possibly the closest thing to seeing the 'real' band? Definitely.
Rog may not be 6 foot four, or particularly tanned, but he sounds like Phil, and looks pretty much like him both physically and in mannerisms and playing styles.
Taff and Steve are absolutely amazing as Scott and Brian - right down to the flowing locks! From the guitar battle that is 'Emerald' to the beautiful two part solo of 'Still in Love' (both taking a part), to the technical and timingly challenging 'Roisin Dubh', neither of them let us down. It was great to hear the authentic twin guitar parts that are so memorably the Lizzy trademark - instead of one guitar with an octaver on it! Like double tracking on vocals, it is the slightly different sounds and sometimes nuances that make the sound what it is, and Twin Lizzy have it to perfection.
To be perfectly honest, if Rog hadn't told us that Don was a last minute stand-in, I don't think I would have suspected (it probably helps that Don used to be in another Thin Lizzy tribute with Rog before!). The guy was incredible and didn't make any mistakes that I noticed (and i too am a skin basher). I only hope that Dave's hand gets better soon - what a bummer for a drummer!
The whole show was rounded off with a quality light show (and, ofcourse the 'Twin Lizzy' logo backdrop). The guys played to a reasonably sized, but very enthusiastic crowd (which had a lot more NWB members in it than I realized!), entertaining us with 2 sets packed full of hits.
If you even THINK you like Thin Lizzy, then I can't recommend these guys enough.I'll definitely be going to see them again - hope to see you there too........
